TITLE: Special Education Teacher


QUALIFICATIONS: Valid California Special Education Credential (Mild/Moderate); Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Authorization; EL Certification required; flexibility, sensitivity and a desire to work with children with special needs.

JOB GOAL: Provides an educational program for students who require an intensive and highly structured program and are placed in a Special Day Class (SDC) or Resource Specialist Program (RSP) program by the Individualized Education Program (IEP).

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides instruction in specialized academic instruction class(es) to meet student needs for basic learning skills and other subject matters commensurate with the emotional, physical and intellectual needs of the pupil.
2. Provides individualized and small group instruction with an emphasis on a remedial language arts and math curriculum.
3. Confers frequently with parents and professional staff members on each pupil’s progress.
4. Develops IEP goals and objectives and evaluates student progress.
5. Provides appropriate physical and psychological environment to establish and reinforce acceptable pupil behavior, attitudes, social skills and self-image.
6. Arranges with staff for the mainstreaming of qualified students into regular classes for partial day instruction to prepare the pupils for returning to the regular classroom on a full-time basis, as written in the IEP.
7. Applies learning theory to student behavior management and lesson planning for individual and group situations.
8. Serves as a member of the IEP team for potential placement and for review of students placed in the specialized academic instruction class.
9. Supervises/directs activities of instructional aides.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.

  1. Mental ability to teach the skills; and skills and knowledge required to interpret and implement policies, rules and regulations, and make determinations relative to the effective performance of the essential responsibilities of the position.
  2. Physical agility to sit, stand, kneel, walk, push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop and to reach overhead.
  3. Physical stamina sufficient to sustain light physical labor for up to 8 hours, sit and/or walk for prolonged periods of time.
  4. Physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, District, school, site-to-site) for sustained periods of time on hard flooring, climb slopes, stairs, ramps and to respond to emergency situations.
  5. Physical strength sufficient to periodically lift and/or carry 25 pounds of materials or supplies; occasionally lift 40 or more pounds with assistance.
  6. Ability to see and read printed matter with or without vision aids.
  7. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.
  8. Occasionally push and/or pull a variety of tools, equipment, or objects weighing 40 or more pounds with assistance.
  9. Manual dexterity to carry out the functions of the above essential responsibilities.
  10. Ability to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly.
  11. Ability to work indoor and outdoor.
