CLASS TITLE: SCHOOL BUS DRIVER

 

BASIC FUNCTION

Under direction of an assigned supervisor, operate a variety of school buses over designated routes to transport students, including students with special needs, to and from school and school-related activities; prepare and maintain records and reports related to bus operation and student behavior as appropriate.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:  Incumbents in the classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

 

  • Operate a variety of school buses over designated routes to transport students to and from school and school-related activities. (E1)
  • Maintain discipline and safety on the bus. (E1)
  • Maintain vehicle operation records such as number of passengers carried, miles traveled and fuel used. (E1)
  • Transport community groups for trips and special events. (E2)
  • Inspect vehicles for safety and report defects and need for repairs. (E2)
  • Prepare reports related to bus operation and student behavior and distribute as appropriate; maintain cleanliness of assigned vehicle. (E3)
  • Communicate with school staff and parents regarding student behavior.
  • Assist students on and off the bus as necessary.
  • Report emergencies by radio and administer first aid as needed.
  • Transport sick or injured students home when other school personnel are not available.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

A.            Graduation from High School or equivalent.

 

B.            One year (1) experience in the operation of a school bus or other large motor vehicle preferred.

 

 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • A certificate stating freedom from Tuberculosis.
  • Valid First Aid Certification or CHP Equivalent
  • Valid CPR Certification or CHP Equivalent
  • A valid California Class B Driver’s License.
  • School Bus Drivers’ Certificate issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
  • Current DL51 Medical Card issued by a licensed Physcian or Occupational Specialist.

 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Safe school bus driving practices and techniques.
  • California Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code Applicable to the operation of school buses.
  • Effective communication skills.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Train students how to ride a bus safely.
  • Operate a variety of District school buses, including vans, safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain order of passengers.
  • Operate prescribed bus route.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Perform prescribed safety checks.
  • First aid procedures.
  • Maintain vehicle records.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other people.
  • Remain calm in a variety of situations.

 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  • Sitting or bending at the waist.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Seeing to read and compose written materials.
  • Operating a school bus for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard.
  • Lift or move up to 50 pounds. 

 

ENVIRONMENT:

  • Transportation area and/or school bus operation environment.
  • Subject to demanding time lines and constant interruptions.
  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather and loud noise conditions.
  • Uses a vehicle and occasionally works evenings or weekends.

 

HAZARDS:

  • Exposure to diesel and exhaust fumes.
  • Sitting for an extended period of time.
  • Exposure to abusive or uncooperative individuals.

Certificate stating freedom from tuberculosis required upon hire 5. Valid First Aid Certification or CHP equivalent (Attached) 6. Valid CPR Certification or CHP equivalent (Attached) 7. Valid Class B license (Attached) 8. School Bus Drivers' Certificate issued by the CHP (Attached) 9. Current DL51 Medical Card issued by a licensed physician or occupational specialist (Attached) 10. Copy of current T-01 training card (Attached) 11. Resumes encouraged but not required

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and one year experience in the operation of a school bus. MUST HAVE A VALID CALIFORNIA CLASS B DRIVER'S LICENSE.

  • Certification (School Bus Driver certificate issued by CHP)
  • CPR/First Aid Certification (First Aid and CPR required (or CHP equivalent))
  • DMV Printout (DMV H-6 Printout, less than 30 days old)
  • Driver's License Copy (Class B License required)
  • Health (FMCSA- Medical Certificate issued by a health care provider)
