GENERAL PURPOSE 

Under general supervision, performs a variety of journey-level duties in the installation and replacement of glass, screening, Venetian blinds, and curtains for District buildings, structures, and facilities; and, as assigned, performs related duties.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS 

This is a full journey-level classification responsible for performing a wide variety of duties related to the installation and replacement of glass, screening, Venetian blinds, and curtains for District buildings, structures, and facilities. Incumbents perform their duties independently, following general instructions, work orders, and established guidelines and procedures. Assignments vary, encompass a variety of tasks, and require sound initiative and judgment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

  1. Repairs and replaces broken windows and door glass; measures, cuts, and installs windows, mirrors, and other glass fixtures.
  2. Installs, repairs, and replaces screens, screen doors, and related hardware.

  3. Operates tools and equipment utilized in the glazing trade, including but not limited to, saws, planers, shapers, jointers, sanders, and hand saws; and, maintains and services tools and equipment.
  4. Removes putty and broken glass from windows, doors, and skylights in school and office buildings; measures size of openings; cuts and sets new glass; and, prepares or replaces related hardware and wooden window frames.
  5. Determines grade, size, and type of glass and submits requisitions according to established guidelines.
  6. Builds, repairs, and maintains Venetian blinds; repairs and maintains curtains, drapes, and window sashes; and,  replaces cords and repairs tracks.
  7. Maintains an inventory of glass, screening, and mirrors.

  8. Repairs, finishes, constructs, and alters various wooden articles and structures such as walls, counters, doors, window frames, forms, fences, cabinets, and shelving.

  9. Performs rough carpentry for new and repair work; repairs damage to walls, floors, roofs and other structures; cuts, sizes, and glues Formica in place; and, sprays acoustical code and color-coding materials.

  10. Performs mill and cabinet work, such as constructing and installing cabinets, bookshelves, bulletin boards, and picture frames.

OTHER DUTIES

  1. Lays concrete blocks or bricks; mixes, pours, and finishes concrete to build ramps, slabs, retaining walls, and sidewalks.
  2. Installs and repairs playground equipment.
  3. Patches and repairs asphalt areas.
  4. Assists other trades personnel as assigned.
  5. Schedules and coordinates activities with other personnel and school site administrators.
  6. Builds or erects, moves, and works on scaffolding and ladders as necessary.
  7. Requisitions necessary tools, equipment, and supplies.
  8. Ensures the timely and accurate completion of preventive maintenance activities.
  9. Provides training and lead direction to lower-level staff.  
  10. Maintains records related to work performed.
  11. Operates light and medium duty equipment.
  12. Provides communication to staff regarding work performed.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  1. Methods, equipment, and materials used in the glazing trade.
  2. Types and sizes of a variety of glass.
  3. Methods and procedures for glass installation and related hardware.
  4. Safety regulations.
  5. Wood finishing, bordering, and reconstructing openings on structural buildings.
  6. Framing and window opening construction.  

Ability to:

  1. Perform journey-level installation and replacement of glass and screening.
  2. Repair Venetian blinds and curtains.
  3. Determine grade, size and type of glass.
  4. Replace a variety of glass.
  5. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  6. Work independently with little direction.

  7. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  8. Meet schedules and timelines.
  9. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  10. Maintain routine records and inventory.

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalency, or higher education; and,
  • One (1) year of journey-level experience in the glazier trade.

 Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements: 

  • A valid California Driver's License.
  • Proof of automobile liability insurance coverage.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

Listed below are examples of the physical aspects that this classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

  • Indoor and outdoor work environment.

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate glazier tools and equipment.
