LOS GATOS-SARATOGA JOINT UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION Class Title: Groundskeeper/Gardener Basic Function: Under general supervision, to perform skilled gardening and grounds maintenance work; to maintain, cultivate, and repair athletic fields; and to perform related duties as assigned. Examples of Duties: Performs skilled gardening work in maintaining landscaped and lawn areas. Plants, waters, trims, fertilizes, weeds, sprays, and cultivates trees, plants, shrubs, lawns, fields, and flowers. Replaces sprinkler heads. Operates equipment, including power lawn mowers, sprayers, tractors, trucks, rototillers, air compressors, cement and carpentry tools. Fertilizes and sprays insecticides and herbicides on lawns and landscaped areas for weed and pest control. Rakes leaves. Cleans walks, field, and other facilities. Trims trees, hedges, and shrubs. Edges lawns and borders. Lines and marks fields. Maintains and improves the athletic fields, including football fields, practice fields, baseball fields, tennis courts, and surrounding areas. Fertilizes and aerates fields. Chalks field for football games. Prepares track for athletic events. Burns fields. Sets automatic timing clocks for sprinkler systems. Performs all related duties as assigned. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of: Basic methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in grounds maintenance and gardening work. General safety procedures related to grounds maintenance. Methods, materials and tools used in planting, cultivating, and caring for lawns and fields. Hand and power tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance work and field preparation. Ability to: Use various gardening and grounds maintenance tools and power equipment safely and efficiently. Operate motorized equipment. Use gardening hand tools. Perform heavy physical labor. Work with minimum supervision. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Establish and maintain co-operative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Education and Experience: Two years of experience in grounds maintenance or gardening work, including the use of power driven equipment or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities. Licensing and Other Requirements: Possession of a valid California Drivers License is required. 1/95
