Under the direction of the Director of Maintenance and Operations, Custodians shall work independently in the performance of their duties. The normal areas of responsibility shall include tasks associated with keeping an assigned area of buildings and grounds in a clean, sanitary and safe condition. Responsible for cleaning, minor repairs of furniture and operation of related equipment.
Essential Duties:
- Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events.
- Cleans assigned school facilities for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
- Cleans indoor areas resulting from meal service preparation and production.
- Evaluates situations for the purpose of taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Inspects school facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and/or identifying necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
- Maintains supplies and equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.
- Performs minor maintenance for the purpose of making minor repairs and/or responding to immediate concerns.
- Prepares facility for the daily operations/activities for the purpose of ensuring school facilities are operational and safe.
- Provides traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lot/s.
10. Repairs furniture, fixtures, and equipment for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition.
11. Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment.
12. Secures facilities and grounds (e.g. set alarms, lock doors, etc.) for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to organization.
Secondary Duties:
- Assist with grounds work.
- Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Skills:
- A. Knowledge of:
? Safety procedures and practices used in grounds and maintenance work.
? Tools, equipment and machinery for planting, cultivating and caring for lawns, flowers, shrubs, trees and plants.
? Hand and power tools and equipment used in custodial, grounds and routine maintenance.
? Basic mathematics.
? Oral and written communications skills.
? Methods and techniques of professional phone etiquette.
? Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
? English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
? Health and safety regulations.
- B. Ability to:
- Drive standard transportation vehicle
- Operate related equipment.
- Work independently with little or no supervision.
- Plan, organize and coordinate work to meet schedules and deadlines.
- Work with and exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, and cultural populations of students and staff regardless of ability status.

Experience and Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Custodial or maintenance experience desired.
License and Certificates:
- Valid California driver’s license and a safe driving record, as this position may require driving a personal or District vehicle between various district locations to conduct work.
Working Conditions:
Environment: Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 80% walking, and 15% standing. The job is performed under temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Physical Abilities: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally bend, kneel, crouch; to reach overhead, above shoulders and horizontally; to lift (up to 50 Ibs), carry, push, and/or pull heavy equipment.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction to observe computer monitors and read reports.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
