LANDSCAPE SPECIALIST 

 DEFINITION: 

 Receives general supervision from the Landscape Maintenance Supervisor to operate a riding and push power mowers, perform routine grounds and lawn maintenance; and perform related duties as assigned.

 

 REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below (E).  This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification but is intended to accurately reflect the principle job elements.)

Operate and maintain riding and push power mowers, power clippers, hedgers, weed eaters and other landscaping and grounds maintenance equipment. (E)

Plant, cultivate, water, trim, prune and fertilize shrubs, hedges, trees and all landscape areas. (E)

Sweep walks and court areas pick up paper and rubbish. (E)

Abate weeds by hand, using power tools, and spraying herbicides (E)

May be required to drive a truck and trailer to transport equipment and supplies to various sites(E)

Assist others with grounds/landscape projects and maintenance work as assigned. (E)

Make minor repairs to irrigation systems, adjust sprinkler heads and report large repairs/issues required at the sties to supervisor. (E)

Line and drag sports areas and track. (E)Assist in other routine gardening duties. (E)

Maintain regular and prompt attendance in the workplace.

Perform related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 

 KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Operation, safe use, and maintenance of power lawn and landscaping tools and equipment.
  • Methods, equipment, and tools used in grounds keeping, general maintenance, and construction.
  • Oral and written communication skills.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Operate power mowing and landscaping equipment.
  • Drive a light truck.
  • Read and write at the level required for successful performance on the job.
  • Physical capability sufficient to perform job tasks
  • Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Carry out oral and written directions; write and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed for the position described.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  

Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to one year of experience in ground maintenance work involving some use of powered mechanical equipment.

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 ENVIRONMENT

Indoor and outdoor work environment.

Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors.

As required must wear protective devices such as earplugs, dust mask, coveralls, gloves, safety boots and safety glasses.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Employee in this position must have/be able to:

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of trade tools.
  • Repetitive hand/arm movements (grasp/pinch) for up to 5 or 6 hours.
  • Repetitive foot movements in operating equipment for up to 5 or 6 hours.
  • Walk over uneven ground and/or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Sit for up to 6 hours.
  • See to perform assigned duties.
  • Lift and/or carry up to 20 lbs at waist and/or shoulder height for extended periods of time.
  • Lift and push up to 150 lbs for up to 100 ft.
  • Push/pull up to 100 lbs.
  • Bend at the waist, kneel, crouch and stoop.
  • Reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Climb ladders and work from heights.
  • See, hear and speak with/without assistive devices sufficient to communicate effectively with others.

 HAZARDS:

Exposure to cleaning agents and chemicals.

Working on ladders.

Vibration from equipment.
