Counselor Brief Description of Position Conducts individual and group counseling of students regarding academic, social or emotional growth as it pertains to the school. Writes and maintains case records and provides summaries and written referrals to the school psychologist and community agencies. Arranges for and leads case conferences which include parents, teachers and student. Serves as a consultant to teachers and parents in order to improve the learning environment of the student. Gathers information about programs conducted by the community agencies on behalf of children and parents. Refers families. Maintains communication between the school and the agency. Investigates truancy and attendance problems. Refers truants to probation when appropriate. Counsels parents. Is responsible for organizing and administrating the school testing program. Prepares referrals and recommendations for testing and placement in special programs within the district. Participates in curriculum development and the development of special programs; ie, drug education, career education, etc. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities such as the Student Council. Interprets the school program and counseling services to individuals and groups as requested. Facilitates communication between all school personnel. Major Duties and Responsibilities Handles all discipline referrals (from teacher, aides, bus drivers, and student initiated) – Utilizes established system, but works towards improving the system. Supervises the Detention Program. Supervises the noon Supervision Program and the Noon Aides. Monitors all activities, duties, etc. that have student misconduct potential. Supervises the attendance system (truancy, class cuts, tardiness, etc.) and serves as school representative to SARB meetings. Adheres closely to district policy and state law as regards all procedures dealing with Suspension, Expulsion, etc. Makes all required and desired parent contacts as regard student suspensions and other student acts unacceptable to the school. Provides supervision for all home athletic games (at our school) and at other school sponsored activities held at our school. Teachers work day is 425 minutes (8:00 to 3:05). This roles requires a longer day – minimum of 480 minutes. (8:00 – 4:00). Serves on a Guidance Committee. Working closely with the school principal is a fundamental requirement of the position. Other duties that maybe assigned by the principal. The work year for counselors is five days more than other employees (Article V Section 3). Payroll automatically builds these extra days into the annual salary of counselors. The counselors’ work year may be increased ten more days (Article IV Section 3). These extra days are voluntary. The first five are compensated at the daily rate. The second five are compensated with in-lieu time (These in-lieu days do not count toward the normal accrual maximum of three days). Qualifications Credential: Education: Experience: Either in counseling or in a role similar to that of Dean of Students, Vice Principal, etc.
