BASIC FUNCTION: 

Under the direction of an assigned Principal, provide instruction and services including consultation, resource and evaluation information for pupils whose needs are identified in a written individualized educational program developed by an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) team and who are assigned to regular classroom teachers for a majority of a school day. 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provide instruction and services for pupils whose needs were identified in a written individualized educational program developed by an IEP team and who are assigned to regular classroom teachers for a majority of a school day. 
  • Provide information and assistance to individuals with exceptional needs and their parents. 
  • Provide consultation, resource and evaluation information and material regarding individuals with exceptional needs to their parents and staff members. 
  • Coordinate special educational services provided to each individual with exceptional needs served through the resource specialist program. 
  • Assess pupil progress on a regular basis and revise individualized educational programs as appropriate; refer students who did not indicate appropriate progress to the IEP team. 
  • Communicate and consult with special education staff, district level staff, administrators, counselors, parents and students for the purpose of coordinating available information and services to individual students. 
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to assigned program, students and related services and activities; develop and implement various systems for organization of mandated paperwork and processes. 
  • Evaluate students according to approved assessment plan; utilize appropriate instruments/tests, observations, records and interviews; prepare complete reports of each student assessed; maintain reports and test records in confidential files; interpret assessment findings for staff, parents, and other authorized persons as necessary.
  • Serve as a member of the Individualized Educational Program team as appropriate.
  • Provide consultation in development of vocational plans for individuals with special needs.
  • Operate a computer and assigned software; operate other standard office equipment as assigned; drive a vehicle to various sites to conduct work as assigned by the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Principles, theories, practices, methods and techniques used in classroom instruction for assigned program.
  • Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
  • Child guidance principles and practices related to students with special needs.
  • Problems and concerns of students with special needs.
  • Curriculum and lesson plan development to meet IEP or other educational goals.
  • Equipment operation related to special education students.
  • Terminology involved in special education or alternative education programs.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws.
  • Research methods and report writing techniques.
  • Basic computer operation. 

ABILITY TO:

  • Instruct special education or alternative education students in individualized tasks to achieve IEP goals.
  • Understand and relate to children with special needs.
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Compile and verify data and prepare reports.
  • Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions.
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Meet schedules and time lines. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

Any combination equivalent to:  bachelor’s degree and three years experience teaching regular and special education classes. 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Valid Resource Specialist Authorization or an Education Specialist Credential.
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license.
  • California EL Authorization preferred.
