DEFINITION: Under the direction of the Director of College/Career in Educational Services, the Counselor directly provides support to the district’s highest-need students as defined within the targeted student- group populations. This employee is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and services that address the physical, mental, social, and emotional needs of students and families. The Counselor works closely with school sites and community agencies to access appropriate services in the community to support students. The Counselor monitors and gathers and presents data regarding the discipline, credit completion rates, and goals made for each student served. Emphasis is on intervention, outreach, and post-secondary plans. Duties require the employee to function at school and in the community.

SCHOOL COUNSELOR

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

As part of a Counseling position, provides informational services to pupils and parents which assist the students in making appropriate decisions relative to educational objectives, school programs, and relationships with teachers, administrators and other students.  Assists in other school programs as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Educational Counseling:

Interprets test results to students in individual or group situations as determined by the counselor; properly places students in classes which fit individual aptitudes, interests and specific goals; checks permanent record (program) of each student against graduation requirements and educational vocational goals; informs students and parents if a student is in danger of failing to meet graduation requirements; assists in the supervision and administration of the high school testing program; confers with students regarding poor or failing grades; coordinates and participates in various orientation programs.

Personal Counseling:

Handles referrals from teachers to counselors; confers with students on a self-referral system; communicates with parents when in the best interest of students; conducts conferences as requested or deemed necessary:  parent-teacher, parent-teacher-student, or teacher-student; does work-up and makes referrals of more serious problems to the district psychologists or appropriate community agencies; assists teachers in identifying students with special learning difficulties.

Other Duties and Activities:

Maintains professional competence through participation in inservice education activities provided by the District and/or in self-selected professional growth activities; assists in the area of curriculum development as needed; interprets counseling functions to staff and students; attempts to see all counselees one or more times a year; performs information gathering services concerning:  1) after school plans, 2) immediate post high school educational plans, 3) immediate post high school vocational plans; disseminates general information as required; performs other related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Credential:

General Pupil Personnel Services, Standard Designated Services, Pupil Personnel Services.

Education:

Bachelor's degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential functions of the position.

Physical Demands; Sit, stand, reach, look down, turn neck (frequently); walk, bend, stoop, squat, push, pull, climb stairs, reach above shoulders (occasionally); kneel, crawl, lay down, use foot controls (infrequently); lift/carry items to 10 pounds (frequently), to 25 pounds (occasionally) and 26 – 90 pounds (students, in emergencies); grasp/manipulate materials and supplies (frequently); use seeing, hearing and speaking (continuously).

Working Conditions:  Indoor classrooms, outdoor school yard and grounds.  Exposure to: student and playground noise, communicable diseases, unruly students, air conditioning, seasonal temperatures, dust, wind, pesticides and possible smog.
