CLASS TITLE: COMPUTER TECHNICIAN BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the System Coordinator, to install, maintain, diagnose and repair computer systems, data communication equipment, and related peripheral equipment at school sites and the District Services Center. To install, implement and monitor local and wide area networks for both mini and microcomputer systems. To install and upgrade systems application software and perform other related duties as requested. This job class must work effectively and positively with others in a wide variety of situations; and demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills. Employees in this classification receive limited supervision with a broad framework of policies and procedures. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Install hardware, including microcomputers, peripherals and network equipment. E Install software, including operating systems and application software. E Install and maintain communication cables and equipment. E Identify equipment malfunctions and perform repairs. E Responds to reports of equipment malfunction and software problems. E Identifies and refer repairs requiring factory services of warranty-covered items. E Provide assistance and training to staff to assure proper uses, and maintenance of equipment and software. E Perform related duties as required and/or assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Wide are networks interrelating to local area networks. LAN operating systems including, but not limited to Novell and Windows NT. Microsoft Workgroup/Windows NT Various network cabling and topologies. District organization, operations and policies. District application software. Basic networking applications. Installation, configuration, and networking microcomputer equipment. Proper care and maintenance of equipment. Preventative maintenance techniques. Ability to: Operate, maintain and adjust microcomputers and related peripheral equipment. Maintain current knowledge of technological advances in the field. Work with other technical personnel on highly sophisticated micro networked projects. Read, interpret and apply complex technical publications, manuals, and other documentation. Communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) to both technical and non-technical users. Troubleshoot and repair malfunctioning hardware and software. Use District application software and assist customers with questions and problems. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Maintain regular attendance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Three or more years of microcomputer and related equipment experience in DOS, Windows and network environments or two years college level coursework or training in computer science or an equivalent combination of education and experience in DOS, Windows and network environments. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver’s license. WORKING CONDITIONS: Environment: Office environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Physical demands: Significant physical abilities including near and far visual acuity, dexterity of hands and fingers, sitting or standing for extended periods of time, ability to lift, carry, push, pull, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach.
