JOB DESCRIPTION
ELEMENTARY MUSIC TEACHER - INSTRUMENTAL, CHORAL, CLASSROOM
Brief Description of Position
Organizes and teaches chorus and beginning and advanced classes in instrumental music to upper grade elementary school students (grades 4, 5 and 6), utilizing standard band and orchestra instruments. Develops a performing band, orchestra, and chorus at each school or group of schools to which assigned. Also may teach or serve as a resource specialist to classroom teacher in teaching classroom skills in music understanding, harmony, and explorations in music during the teaching day.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
1. Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate music learning devices.
2. Instructs students in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the CUSD course of study common to all teachers, as specified in state law and administrative procedures of the school district.
3. Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
4. Encourages and aids students to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible.
5. Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
6. Maintains surveillance over school-owned music, musical instruments and equipment in order to prevent loss or abuse. Makes minor adjustment and requests repairs to instruments as required.
7. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during individual practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.
8. Evaluates each student's musical growth, performance, and musical understanding. Assesses each individual's contribution to the performance of the group. Prepares progress reports.
9. Maintains professional competence through participation in music staff meetings, inservice education workshops and clinics provided by the District and/or self-selected professional growth activities related to music.
10. Works with other members of the District music staff in planning a music education program.
11. Plans and cooperates with school and District administration in providing musical programs for school and community.
12. Works with classroom teachers to ensure that students receive a classroom music program inclusive of skills, understanding, harmony, and exploration in the music area.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
1. Selects appropriate music, books, and instructional aids to enhance learning. Requisitions books, music, musical instruments, instructional aids and instructional supplies; maintains required inventory records.
2. Communicates with parents and school counselors on individual student's progress.
3. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems.
4. Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision Exercised or Received
Under the immediate direction of the Director of Educational Services and the site administrator/designee.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
1. Credential Any valid credential issued by the State of California to perform the services of a teacher in the subject area.
2. Education Bachelor's degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements; major or minor in subject areas preferred. Choral teachers: ability to sing. Instrumental teachers: ability to play at least one standard orchestral instrument.
3. Experience Preference will be given to candidates with experience in teaching music at the elementary level either as part of their practice teaching or paid teaching experience.
4. Personal Qualities Appearance, grooming, and personality which establish a desirable example for students. Ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health. Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teacher. Native musical ability and skill, including the ability to sing and play the piano.
Goals of Effective Performance To develop in each student an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of vocal and/or instrumental music expression; to discover and develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music; to establish good relationships with parents, with professional musicians, and with other staff members.
