This job is a full-time split position teaching K-8 PE, as well as aiding in the 4th grade classroom. Approximately a 50/50 split.

POSITION TITLE: Physical Education Teacher/ Instructional Aide
REPORTS TO: Principal
HOURS: Full Time
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
JOB SUMMARY: To develop in each pupil an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil’s ability. The instructional aide works with, and under the direction of, a classroom teacher to provide assistance in the implementation of the instructional program.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILL:
- Must have a basic understanding of child development and skills necessary to relate to the students being serviced
- Must be able to use the control and discipline techniques that are established for the classroom
- Must work cooperatively with the assigned teacher and other staff
- Friendly with excellent people skills
- Professional demeanor
- Thorough knowledge and familiarity with the organizational structure and practices of the Roman Catholic Church
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES & SPECIFIC DUTIES
1. Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
2. Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
3. Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
4. Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge’s, and strategies of
formal sports, games rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
5. Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil, to the extent feasible.
6. Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the over-all safety of pupils
7. Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property.
8. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
9. Evaluates each pupil’s growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports.
10. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
11. Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
12. Selects and requisitions, equipment, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
13. Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
14. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
15. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.
16. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
17. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
18. Performs other duties as many, from time to time be assigned by the supervisor.
19. Provides assistance for the instructional program including: Lesson planning and implementation, classroom preparation, clerical help and assists in the supervision of students.
20. Work with small groups for tutorial, enrichment purposes and explicit instruction and assessments
21. Collect all materials from homework to permission slips
22. Prepare/run copies
23. File papers in student folders
24. Check and grade seatwork and homework
25. Assist with supervision of school play areas at recess and lunch recess
26. Substitute for classroom teacher in an emergency (short term)
27. Help gather and organize special materials for new units of instruction
28. Prepare bulletin boards
29. Prepare and copy communications for parents at the direction of the teacher
30. Keep records and charts
31. Attend school functions and activities as requested by principal
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: To successfully meet the needs of the students in his/her care, the instructional aide must:
- Engage with students while sitting, kneeling, squatting, bending, or stooping.
- Walking and standing for a period of time of twenty minutes at recess and lunch recess.
- Reach at, below, or above shoulder height with the dominant upper extremities
- Assist in the moving of student desks and chairs. It is occasionally necessary to lift and carry boxes up to twenty-five pounds.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid State Teacher Certification Granted by the Professional Teaching
Standards Board - Bachelor’s Degree with major or minor in Physical Education
- For those teachers with specific coaching assignments, physical stamina and skill, and endorsed in specific coaching area.
