VEHICLE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC I
JOB SUMMARY
This is the entry level class in the Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic series under general supervision by the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor, to perform semiskilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of buses and a variety of motorized equipment; to inspect and service buses and other automotive equipment; and to do other related work as may be required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
~ Perform a variety of minor repairs and adjustments to the District vehicles independently or under direct supervision, following standardized procedures;
~ Assist in performing preventive maintenance or repairs on the District vehicles and equipment;
~ Inspect or rotate tires; may adjust braking systems and make routine carburetor adjustments;
~ Change or clean and replace spark plugs;
~ Change or recharge batteries;
~ Perform service functions including cleaning, lubricating and changing oil on vehicles and equipment; change and repair tires;
~ May wash and polish vehicles and equipment;
~ Change and repair tires;
~ May wash and polish vehicles;
~ Remove and replace components as needed;
~ Assist other mechanics as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE OF
~ Lubricants, lubricating devices, tools and materials used in the servicing, maintenance and repair of buses and other automotive equipment;
~ Methods, materials, equipment and tools in the inspection, servicing, Safe working methods and procedures.
ABILITY TO
~ Perform needed skilled preventive maintenance inspections and repairs on all school buses and District operated vehicles;
~ Diagnose the source of mechanical and electrical malfunctions;
~ Estimate time and materials;
~ Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals;
~ Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, parts and supply catalogs;
~ Write routine reports and correspondence;
~ interpret mechanical and electrical schematics and diagrams;
~ Work with minimal supervision;
~ Maintain established pace;
~ Perform repetitive tasks and complex tasks;
~ Respond appropriately to direction and changes;
~ Use a variety of hand and power tools used in the automotive trade correctly and safely;
~ Maintain simple records and prepare complete and concise reports;
~ Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
~ Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EDUCATION
High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above.
EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of experience in the preventive maintenance and repair of school buses and other District operated vehicles.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Possession of a valid and appropriate (class B) California Driver's License; have an acceptable driving record and qualify for insurability by the District's insurance carrier.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential functions listed above.
Physical Demands: Walk, stand, stoop, squat, kneel, bend, climb, reach (continuously); push, pull and twist (occasionally); lift up to 25 pounds alone, to 100 pounds with assistance (occasionally); grasp and manipulate tools / equipment (continuously); use seeing, hearing and speaking.
Working Conditions: Most work performed indoors, some outdoors. Exposure to: electrically and mechanically operated equipment; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat (Non-weather); vibration; outdoor weather conditions; loud noise (example; bus engines) and possible exposure to dust, wind, and sun.

Bargaining Unit Position March 2003
Classified Bargaining Unit positions in the Hemet Unified School District are subject to an agency fee arrangement. All applicants are subject to a fingerprint clearance (at applicant’s expense) through the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation (DOJ/FBI). Authorization for employment will not be granted until the fingerprint clearance from DOJ/FBI has been accepted. This process takes approximately two (2) to five (5) working days.
