DEFINITION Under the supervision of the Director of Curriculum of Instruction Services, will be responsible for assisting with parent education in reading, mathematics and health matters related to student attendance. As a categorically funded position, works with principals, teachers, community organizations and committees in organizing and coordinating parent education in reading and mathematics. ESSENTIAL DUTIES 1. Assists in planning and providing parent education in reading and mathematics. 2. On an ongoing basis, communicates with parents regarding student achievement and school and community activities. 3. Work with the parent in the community to encourage and facilitate their involvement in classroom and school activities. 4. Work with various organizations, public and private, to establish linkages, services and collaboration to support student achievement in reading and mathematics. 5. Assist in educating parents in health matters as those matters related to student attendance. 6. Contact new families to communicate each the expectations and standards of each school in reading and mathematics as well as to encourage support for the academic growth and the participation of each fam8ly and its children at district schools. 7. Assist in establishing a specific quiet time, schoolwork environment and locations in the home that will promote the accomplishment of homework in reading and mathematics. 8. Conduct surveys as required to support student learning and achievement in reading and mathematics. 9. May write or draft copy for news media, as position requires. 10. Perform other duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Reading and mathematics; basic health conditions that may impact student attendance; effective interpersonal and English language skills in written and oral form; community organizations; and computer skills. Ability to: Communicates effectively in oral and written form with parents, staff, students and community members as required; resourceful initiative, good judgment, and speak, read, write Spanish or another language, is desirable; Type or keyboard at a net corrected speed of 40 words per minute. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions. 1. Exert 10-20 lbs. Of force to lift, carry, push, or pull 2. Sit at a desk or a conference table for extended amounts of time, stand or walk for brief periods. 3. Ability to read, see and distinguish colors, with or without visual aids, and speak in audible tones. 4. Physical agility to bend, stoop, walk, reach overhead and stand for up to two hours. 5. Possess manual dexterity to push/pull, squat, twist and turn. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job. EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be: Experience: High School Diploma or its equivalent, or demonstrate the equivalent of twelfth grade completion, and supplemental training or coursework in a closely related field. Bilingual skills in Spanish is preferred. Passing score on the district basic skill test. Insurability by the liability insurance carrier of the district. Hold a Valid California Driver License.
