Job Summary:
To provide occupational therapy services to individuals with special needs to address the functional needs of the student at school and in the community.
Essential Job Functions:
Identifies individuals with special needs to screen for individuals requiring a more formalized assessment.
Assesses individuals with special needs to identify a base line for future measurement and to plan an appropriate occupational therapy program.
Plans an occupational therapy program to meet student educational goals, and to provide coordinated services.
Implements occupational therapy program to address occupational therapy needs including postural stability, sensory registration, motor planning, fine motor, activities of daily living, environmental adaptions, and social play as appropriate to the educational setting.
Documents student progress to show status and progress of occupational therapy program and individuals’ reaction to therapy.
Communicates with parents, agency staff, school staff, and physical therapist to facilitate services to individuals with special needs.
Instructs agency staff and teachers to increase awareness of appropriate physical responses to identified individuals,
Provides direct supervision to COTA’s.
Essential Job Requirements - Qualifications:
Experience Required:
Work experience relevant to the population served.
Two or more years experience in pediatrics including practice in assessment and therapy skills appropriate for the needs of the varied student population preferred.
Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
Knowledge of:
· physically handicapped students
· therapeutic activities specific to the population served in the educational environment
· principles of methods and procedures of therapy treatment specific to this population
· basic data collection procedures
Skills to:
· train in postural stability/sensory processing
· train in social/play behavior
· teach activities of daily living
· train in motor control/sensorimotor coordination
· facilitate environmental adaptations
Ability to:
· interact effectively with coworkers
· communicate effectively with a variety of people in addition to coworkers
· demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude towards students and their parents/care givers
· lift physically handicapped students up to 40 lbs.
· do team lifting when necessary
Education Required:
Bachelors Degree
Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:
Current OT License issued by the California Board of Occupational Therapy.
National Board Certification.
Other Specialized Requirements:
Should demonstrate continued professional growth through continuing education or advanced study attendance at workshops.
