Position Available MiraCosta College’s Counseling Department invites applications for one equity-minded, full-time, 195-day-per-year, tenure-track faculty position beginning in July 2022. Principal responsibilities include providing academic, career, and personal counseling services to students at MiraCosta College; leading group counseling sessions and workshops; and providing educational planning services for both new and continuing students. The person selected will also share leadership roles with other full-time faculty.

About the Department
The Counseling Department strives to empower students through holistic counseling practice to make wise choices, believe in themselves, and create success stories. We engage in equity-minded practices to provide a welcoming environment for all students and support each student uniquely. We believe in providing accurate and timely information and prioritize students first in all of our professional interactions, decisions, and considerations. The department is engaged in campus-wide efforts around “Redesigning the Student Experience” and focused on infusing career exploration and planning as a foundation for counseling services. We serve both credit and noncredit students at all three MiraCosta College sites and currently consist of 17 full-time faculty members committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Compensation
Initial salary placement is based on education and experience and ranges from $88,183.50 (class I, step 1 × 1.1080 time factor for 195 on-duty days per year) to $147,627.70 (class VI-doctorate, step 10 × 1.1080 time factor) on the 2022-2023 Annual Salary Schedule. Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for this position, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
1. Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR
2. Master’s degree in “Education, Concentration: Counseling”; “Education: Counseling Option”; “Education: Counseling and Guidance Concentration”; “Education: Educational and Clinical Counseling”; “Education: Educational Counseling”; “Education: School Counseling”; “Guidance and Counseling”; “Marriage & Family Counseling”; or “Social Welfare” (approved comparable degrees at MiraCosta College); OR
3. Bachelor’s degree in any of the majors listed in (1) above AND a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) license valid in California; OR
4. the equivalent. Applicants who do not possess the EXACT degree major(s) required to meet the minimum qualifications must attach an equivalency narrative and supporting documentation at the time of application. 5. a fully satisfied, lifetime California Community College credential authorizing instruction/service in the appropriate subject matter; AND

Representative Duties (E = essential job function)
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Provide academic, career, and personal counseling (face-to-face and/or online) using culturally-responsive techniques and equitable practices for engaging diverse populations of students. (E)
2. Counsel students with making course selections and help them to develop abbreviated and comprehensive education plans using the college’s online education planning system.
3. Participate actively in departmental committees, subcommittees, projects, and program review.
4. Keep abreast of changing degree, certi?cate, and transfer information in order to counsel students about the most current requirements. (E)
5. Lead group presentations including student-interest workshops and seminars, orientations, group counseling, and other matriculation functions. (E)
6. Teach credit classes in college success and career/life planning. (E)
7. Conduct counseling in non-traditional settings. (E)
8. Exhibit proven cultural humility/pro?ciency skills when working with students from diverse backgrounds (e.g., disproportionately impacted populations that include Black/African American, Latinx, Native Hawaiian/Paci?c Islander, Foster Youth, LGBTQIA+, and adult students age 25 and older). (E)
9. Collaborate with colleagues, community partners, and local high schools in programs or initiatives that serve racially and ethnically diverse students. (E)
10. Participate in ongoing professional development activities in the ?eld of counseling and cultural humility/pro?ciency. (E)
11. Participate in the district’s and academic senate’s participatory governance processes and committees. (E)
12. Assist in the creation, review, development and evaluation of courses both online and on-ground, certi?cates, and programs that are culturally responsive to students’ needs, and in collaboration with other faculty/instructors as appropriate. (E)
13. Work in collaboration with other full-time and associate faculty in coordinating and maintaining currency of curriculum that is culturally responsive to students’ needs. (E)
14. Participate in the development, assessment and evaluation of student learning outcomes (SLOs). (E)

1. Previous experience providing counseling services at a California community college within the last six years.
2. Knowledge and use of technology in counseling.
3. Previous experience providing academic counseling services that serve disproportionately impacted students.

All degrees and units used to satisfy the minimum qualifications must be from postsecondary institutions accredited by an accreditation agency recognized by either the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation. If your degree/coursework is from a college or university anywhere outside of the United States, you must submit a detailed evaluation from a professional evaluation agency. Transcripts or translations in English still require the evaluation to show the U.S. equivalence of your degree.
b. If needed to meet the minimum qualifications, a copy (front and back) of your fully satisfied, lifetime California Community College credential authorizing service in the appropriate area.
c. If needed to meet the minimum qualifications, a copy of your Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) license valid in California.
The screening and interview committee will review application materials two to five weeks following the closing/first screening date. Applicants selected for interview will be contacted by phone; those not selected will be notified by e-mail. For interviewees, the selection process will include a panel interview, as well as possible presentation and written exercise. All first-round interviews will be conducted via Zoom. Final interviews may be conducted via Zoom or in person. If in person, interview candidates coming from out of state or over 300 miles away will be reimbursed for travel expenses up to $500.
Offer of Employment
An offer of employment to the person selected for this position is contingent upon 1) proof of being fully vaccinated* for COVID-19 or requesting and receiving approval for a medical or religious exemption; 2) successful completion of a pre-placement physical exam at district expense; 3) submission of a current tuberculosis clearance certificate; 4) proof of eligibility to work in the United States; 5) fingerprint clearance; and 6) approval by the Board of Trustees.
*Individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks or more after they have received the second dose in a 2-dose series (e.g. Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna), or two weeks or more after they have received a single-dose vaccine (e.g., Johnson and Johnson [J&J/Janssen]).
Workload and Other Employment Information Annual on-duty days will be 195, spread over 12 months. The standard contractual work week for counselors is forty (40) hours, including twenty-five (25) contact hours, ten (10) preparation hours, and five (5) institutional service hours. The twenty-five (25) contact hours is defined to include any counseling activity in which counseling service is provided to a student or students, including instruction, workshops, individual or group counseling. The ten (10) preparation hours include course work preparation and counseling preparation (of which 5 hours must be on campus). The expectation is that thirty (30) hours will be on campus. Counselors assigned to teach classes are designated as classroom faculty for that portion of their workload, which is computed accordingly as classroom LHE. Counselor assignments to teach classes require a “flex” obligation of two (2.0) hours of documented professional development activities per one (1.0) classroom LHE (fall and spring). These hours shall be translated into non-classroom LHE according to the formulas and tables in the Faculty Assembly Agreement.
In fall 2021, the district and the Faculty Assembly established a Pilot Program via an MOU for the spring 2022 and fall 2022 semesters. The Pilot Program will include a group of ten (10) counselors. Those selected for the Pilot Program shall be from a variety of departments with counseling services (e.g., EOPS, DSPS/SAS, Transfer, General, etc.) to review the feasibility of expanding remote counseling opportunities and the potential reduction of the thirty (30) hour on-ground requirements. The dean may authorize up to 15 of the on-ground 30 hours to be conducted remotely, including student contact and preparation. The results of the Pilot Program will be available for discussions of a subsequent MOU for 2023-2024.
The person selected for this position will be assigned a Faculty Service Area (FSA) in General Counseling (Non-Classroom) and General Counseling (Classroom) will be subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation. Adherence to all District policies and procedures is expected.

Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional light lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; ability to work at a computer, including repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business.

Working Conditions Primarily works in an office or classroom environment. Subject to frequent interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone; intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a disagreeable fashion. May work at any district location or authorized facility during day and/or evening hours with occasional evenings, and/or weekends on an as-needed basis. Occasional local travel may be requested.
