APPLE VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
CLASS TITLE: PARAEDUCATOR
BASIC FUNCTION
Under direction of the Principal, assist a K-12 certificated teacher in presenting and reinforcing instruction in a school classroom or after school program; tutor individual and small groups of students, reinforcing instruction; perform clerical duties in support of student achievement.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
These are the ParaEducators working with students other than with special medical needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Incumbents in the classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
- Tutor individual and small groups of students, reinforcing math, language, reading concepts and other academic disciplines as directed by the teacher. (E1)
- Assist teacher in providing instruction in an assigned learning environment. (E1)
- Communicate with teachers regarding individual student progress and conduct; prepare and submit for approval progress reports; recommend modified instructional materials to meet individual student needs. (E2)
- Collect materials and prepare for the daily lesson plans. (E2)
- Administer individual tests and pretests and assist in proctoring group test.(E2)
- Assist in maintaining student data. (E2)
- Grade work sheets, homework and other assignments. (E3)
- Distribute and collect paper, pencils and other instructional materials. (E3)
- Monitor and observe student behavior and report misconduct according to established guidelines.
- Operate multi-media equipment.
- Assist students in completing homework.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A. Graduation from High School or equivalent. Associates Degree preferred.
B. Supplemental coursework in education and one (1) year of experience in working in an educational or academic program setting.
Or
Any combination of education, training, and/or experience which demonstrates ability to perform the essential duties may be substituted for the required experience and/or education.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- A certificate stating freedom from Tuberculosis.
- Must meet NCLB requirements.
- Valid First Aid Certification.
- Valid CPR Certification preferred.
- A valid California Drivers License preferred.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Basic principles of child guidance and early childhood development.
- Reading, math, language and other subjects presented throughout the K-12 grade levels.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Record-keeping methods.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
ABILITY TO:
- Assist in providing instruction and reinforcing concepts and materials presented by the teacher.
- Tutor individual and small groups of students.
- Perform clerical duties in support of classroom activities.
- Operate audio-visual equipment.
- Work effectively and cooperatively with teachers, students, parents and administrators.
- Understand the methods, procedures and limitations of the assignment.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Type/keyboard 25 words per minute net.
- Operate a PC and related software.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
- Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
- Bending or twisting at the waist.
- Seeing to read and compose written materials.
- Operating a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard.
- Lift or move up to 50 pounds.
ENVIRONMENT:
- Indoor and outdoor school campus environment.
- Subject to time lines and interruptions.
- Occasional outside weather conditions.
- Occasionally works evenings or weekends.
HAZARDS:
- Extended viewing of computer monitor.
- Sitting for an extended period of time.
- Noise level is usually moderate.
