HEAD CUSTODIAN

DEFINITION

Under direction, to supervise and participate in custodial maintenance at a school; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The above class is used for the lead position of day custodian at a school.  Only one position at a school may be allocated to this class.  Incumbents are given additional responsibilities over and above those of custodian as enumerated below.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Confers with Principal regarding the custodial program at the school and the need for special cleaning or setup jobs; orders and receives custodial supplies from warehouse; receives and distributes other school supplies; prepares work schedules for other custodial personnel assigned to the school and passes on to them special orders for the day; trains new custodians assigned to the school; does a wide variety of minor maintenance on the school plant and equipment, such as touchup painting, and minor repairs on school equipment and fixtures; replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; checks heaters in rooms to see they are working properly; supervises summer custodian maintenance program at school; meets and assists visitors, faculty, cafeteria personnel, maintenance men from the District, and the children.

In addition to the above, performs the usual duties of a custodian, such as sweeps, scrubs, mops, waxes and oils floors; vacuums rugs and carpets; dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; empties and cleans waste receptacles; cleans rest rooms; washes blackboards, windows, and walls; polishes metal work; takes care of equipment and materials; assists in moving and arranging furniture and equipment; sets up buildings and rooms for meetings, and special events; adjusts shades or blinds; adjusts desks and other furniture; cleans Venetian blinds, scrapes and refinishes floors; picks up paper on grounds and walks; weeds and waters lawns, unlocks and locks doors to buildings; may raise or lower flag; empties garbage and trash cans; operates scrubbers, buffers, vacuum cleaners, and related custodial equipment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

           Methods of cleaning and preserving floors, walls and fixtures;

           Cleaning materials, disinfectants, equipment used in custodial work;

           Common tools and their uses;

           Techniques of effective supervision.

Ability to:

           Quickly learn the schedules, procedures and equipment used in custodial grounds work;

           Use common electrical cleaning equipment;

           Read and write and carry out oral and written instructions;

           Perform manual labor;

           Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees, teachers, students, and visitors to the school;

           Schedule and supervise work of custodians.

Physical Requirements:

• Extensive standing or walking.
• Physical strength sufficient to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Frequent activity requiring full-body exertion.
• Ability to see for purposes of reading correspondence, documents and other printed matter.
• Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels in person and/or on the telephone.
• Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation in person and/or on the telephone.
• Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.

EXPERIENCE: 

Three years of experience in custodial work

EDUCATION:                                  

Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
