OXNARD SCHOOL DISTRICT PERSONNEL 5712 BP COVER BUS DRIVER/OFFICE ASSISTANT Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. DEFINITION To provide coverage for District bus drivers during absences; to drive a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules; to pick up and discharge students and provide safe and efficient transportation for District students; to perform routine clerical functions in support of the Transportation Department; to provide information to the general public; and to perform a variety of duties relative to assigned area of responsibility. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from the Transportation Manager. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Functions: 1. As required, drive a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students. 2. Escort students across streets and roadways when necessary stopping traffic as required. Load and unload students in compliance with VC22112. 3. Inspect bus prior to operation for safety purposes utilizing a designated safety checklist, report any malfunctions; ensure bus is in safe operational mode. 4. Service bus with fuel, water and oil; clean exterior and interior of buses including picking up debris, sweeping floor, waxing and washing the exterior, wiping upholstery and cleaning windshields and headlights. 5. Maintain appropriate behavior among students on buses; follow District policies regarding student control and contact with parents, teachers, administrators and the public. 6. Maintain records concerning vehicle maintenance, miles driven and number of children transported; prepare student conduct, incident and accident reports; report incidents which affect the safety of students; report mechanical defects and malfunctions to appropriate personnel. 7. Attend scheduled safety meetings; ensure bus operations are conducted in compliance with District safety rules and regulations. 8. Perform emergency assistance as needed, including lifting and carrying, up to forty (40) pounds the length of the interior of the bus and down the front steps, and exiting the bus by way of the side emergency door. 9. As assigned, transport students and teachers on field trips to various locations. 10. Perform emergency assistance as needed. 11. Assist in locating missing children; assist in driving bus to repair shop as required. 12. Perform clerical work such as posting records, making arithmetic computations and securing information from clearly indicated sources. 13. Duplicate items, package and distribute completed copies; maintain records, inventories, index and cross reference files. 14. Maintain a variety of logs, records and files. 15. Provide routine information and direct inquiries to the appropriate person or office; answer the telephone and take messages; make phone calls to request, provide or verify information as directed. 16. Operate a personal computer and peripheral equipment, using modern software, including word processing and data input; operate a variety of modern office machines and equipment such as a calculator, FAX and copier. 17. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: • Provisions of the California State Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting students. • Basic operational characteristics of school transportation vehicle. • Policies and procedures governing the reporting of vehicle accidents and incidents. • Principles and practices of basic first aid. • Methods and techniques of basic vehicle preventive maintenance. Knowledge of Continued: • Methods and techniques of enforcing safety regulations on a school transportation vehicle. • Principles and procedures of record keeping. • Safe driving practices as they relate to school transportation. • Modern office procedures, methods and equipment, including computers. • Appropriate terminology of assigned department. • English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. • Techniques of telephone etiquette. • Basic mathematical principles. Ability to: • Drive a school bus in a safe and efficient manner. • Enforce school regulations and maintain order among students on buses. • Maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition. • Provide assistance to students entering and exiting a school bus. • Continuously maintain all licenses and certificates necessary to operate a school bus in the state of California. • Operate a designated bus route including stops and traffic hazards. • Understand and follow oral and written instructions. • Meet schedules and time lines. • Observe legal and defensive driving practices. • Work independently with minimal direction. • Provide information and assistance to parents, the general public and other staff members in a helpful, courteous and timely manner. • Maintain confidentiality of privileged information obtained in the course of work. • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. • Understand and follow oral and written directions. • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. • Perform clerical work such as filing, duplication, typing and maintaining simple records. • Make mathematical calculations quickly and accurately. • Operate a personal computer and peripheral equipment, using modern software; operate a variety of modern office machines and equipment such as a typewriter, calculator, FAX and copier. • Plan and organize work to meet schedules and time lines. • Lift 40 pounds. Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: One year experience in operating a school transportation vehicle; general office experience. Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. License or Certificate • Possession of a valid California Special Driver Certificate, with no restrictions, and a valid California Class B Commercial driver's license with a “P” and an “S” endorsement and air brake certification; California Driver’s License. • Possession of a First Aid Certificate issued by the American Red Cross or First Aid Certificate issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in conjunction with the Special Driver's Certificate. • Possession of Current D.O.T. D-5l Health Certificate. WORKING CONDITIONS Environmental Conditions: School Bus environment; travel from site to site; occasional exposure to body fluids; exposure to fumes, noise and emergency situations; inclement weather conditions.
