POSITON TITLE: District Nurse ________________________________________ SUMMARY OF POSITIONS: Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services or Designee, the District Nurse conducts a health service program at various schools for the evaluation, improvement, and protection of the health of pupils and school employees in accordance with state law and district policies and procedures. DUTIES: ? Conducts medical case finding, health screening, appraisal, and referral activities related to significant health concerns of students. ? Observes and assesses health and development status as needed. ? Informs and advises teachers regarding any unusual health conditions of students which may have classroom implications for the student and / or teacher. ? Consults with and refers pupils needing medical care or welfare assistance to appropriate community or private resources. May include home visits for evaluation and referral. ? Notifies parents of pupils about illnesses, serious injuries, special physical problems, and potential health problems and provides counseling directed toward pursuit of appropriate action by the parent on behalf of the child. In addition to parental counseling and provides health counseling services for students and staff. ? Implements and monitors a communicable disease prevention and control program in accordance with District, County, and State guidelines. Provides in-service as needed. ? Confers and communicates with community agencies, doctors, clinics and hospitals as appropriate to promote health and welfare of students. ? Assists in the promotion and teaching or implementation of district approved health education and family life program, and serves as a health education resource to staff, parents and students. ? Participates on District committees related to health, safety and welfare of students. ? Advises the District on school health laws and procedures and insures the District meets State and Federal standards on all health-related screening and immunization requirements. ? Provide training for Medi-Cal Administrative Activities reimbursement and maintaining records for Medi-Cal and Medi-Cal Administrative Activities. ? Insures an appropriate health and immunization record is prepared and maintained for each student ? Assists in the identification of problems regarding safety, sanitation, and food services for each student. ? Provides emergency nursing services for ill or injured pupils at school when requested. ? Participates in prevention of child abuse by evaluation, referral and child advocacy. ? Serves as a member of student School Success Teams and special education Individual Education Planning Teams as appropriate. ? Provides District First Aid in-service to new staff and refresher courses as needed. ? Completes the vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening programs at appropriate grade levels. Also prepares school and District summary reports as necessary regarding these screening programs, the immunization program and other health related programs as needed. ? Administer surveys such as required by the State of California. ? Trains health services staff to include a Licensed Vocational Nurse and school site Health Clerks. ? Attend County Office School Nurses meetings. ? Orders District health supplies. ? Maintain cooperative working relationships with parents, staff, and other district personnel. ? Other related duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE and ABILITIES: ? Laws and regulations governing school health services and the Nurse Practice Act. ? Laws and regulations relating to Special Education programs and criteria for student placement with emphasis on health considerations. ? Processes involved in various aspects of health, disease, and the prevention of disease to include blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases. ? Developmental, clinical and education processes. ? Community resources and referral options for children with physical defects and/or handicapping conditions. ? Prevention and identification of substance abuse. ? Social, cultural, linguistic diversity of district, city and communities. ? Effective communication in both oral and written form ? Basic computer knowledge EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and LICENSE/CERTIFICATES: ? A valid California School Nurse Credential with Bachelor’s of Science Degree (RN) or Bachelor’s of Science Degree (RN) and willingness to apply for Emergency School Nurse Credential and agreement to complete required School Nurse Credential Program within 5 years. ? A Valid California Registered Nurses License. ? Audiometry Certificate is required as a condition of employment. ? A current CPR/First Aid certification. ? A certified Instructor in CPR and First Aid. ? A valid California driver’s license. ? Minimum three years nursing experience. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: Work at a desk/conference table or in meetings of various configurations. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Bending at the waist and reaching to retrieve and maintain files and records. Carrying, pushing, or pulling equipment to load and unload. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment such as a computer keyboard. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone; make presentations; provide training and/or direction; to communicate; provide assistance and information. Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. Kneeling or crouching. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Walking for long periods of time.
