ABOUT THE POSITION

Long Beach Community College District is currently seeking one (1) full-time tenure track American Sign Language Professor commencing with the 2022 fall semester. The primary teaching assignment involves instructing lecture and laboratory courses in American Sign Language 1, 2, 3 & 4 and American Deaf Studies 24 in the ESL, ASL & Linguistics Department. These courses cover the first two years of instruction in American Sign Language as well as an introduction to Deaf Cultures. They are transferable to the four-year university and lead to an Associate's Degree of Arts in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies. This assignment also includes curriculum development, specifically in the development of ASL-English Interpreting courses. Furthermore, it includes participation in the shared governance process through work in normal professional activities, committee work, student activities, and professional development, as well as helping supervise the ASL-Deaf Studies program.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

• Bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, OR, an Associate degree and six years of professional experience, OR meet equivalent qualifications established by the District, AND

• Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

 

• Master's degree in American Sign Language, ASL-English Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or related discipline

• Fluency in ASL as demonstrated by a minimum score of 4.0 on the ASL Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) and/or SLPI: ASL rating of Advanced Plus, or equivalent assessment

• National Interpreter Certification

• Recent experience teaching ASL and/or ASL-English interpreting at the college level

• Recent experience interpreting ASL-English

• Evidence of innovation, scholarship, or leadership in the teaching of American Sign Language and/or ASL-English Interpreting at the community college level

• Evidence of the ability to teach a balanced course load at various levels within the department's offerings

• Demonstrated excellence in the use of a variety of culturally responsive approaches and methodologies to increase student success

• Knowledge of and experience in curriculum development.
