El Camino College is seeking a full-time, tenure-track, 10-month, faculty member to join the Special Resource Center (SRC) team. Under the general supervision of the division dean and director of the SRC, the Learning Disability Specialist will provide a variety of professional services for students with learning disabilities and other disabilities such as facilitate the interactive process to identify functional limitations, fundamental requirements, and reasonable accommodations to ensure equal educational access; provide and document appropriate services and maintain timely and accurate records; discuss with students compensatory learning and disability management strategies; refer students to other appropriate campus and community resources; implement the California Community College Learning Disabilities Eligibility & Services Model by assessing students and reviewing disability related documentation to determine eligibility for accommodations and services; advocate for students by liaison and providing expertise in consulting with colleagues, collaborating with instructors and community entities (Department of Rehabilitation, Regional Centers, etc.); provide documentation to transfer institutions or high stakes testing agencies; develop disability awareness training for the campus and community; provide student outreach/marketing of the SRC and the Educational Development program (including workshops, orientations, campus tours); consult with SRC colleagues, faculty, and administration regarding access to facilities, technology, instructional programs, college information, and student services; provide expertise for college personnel in meeting the guidelines of federal and state disability laws; participate in college governance via committee assignments, advisory boards, and other student initiatives such as Guided Pathways; compile data and prepare reports; engage in professional development activities that include diversity, equity, accessibility, inclusion and social justice; provide curriculum development and instruction and focuses on access and retention; use the college's learning management system for instruction online, on campus, or hybrid courses within the Educational Development Department of the SRC designed for students with learning disabilities and other disabilities; design instructional material to meet the diverse learning needs of students with disabilities; develop/review curriculum and assessment of learning outcomes to improve teaching and learning in achieving El Camino College's mission of institutional effectiveness, quality educational programs, and vibrant student support services; participate fully in department responsibilities.

 

The Learning Disability Specialist must demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff; have extensive knowledge in field applicable to current industry standards ; examine and remediate one's instruction, interactions, and/or practices to more effectively engage and support diverse students.

 

This position is part of a team of professionals providing coordinated and comprehensive academic support designed to meet legal mandates and success for students with disabilities in a diver learning environment. To teach online or hybrid courses, El Camino faculty must either complete our Online Learning & Teaching with Canvas (OLTC) course or provide sufficient evidence that they are prepared to develop and teach quality online courses through our waiver process. Some assignments may include evening, weekend hours, and/or dual enrollment courses offered offsite on high school campuses.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's in learning disabilities, special education, education, psychology, speech language pathology, communications disorders, educational or school psychology, counseling, or rehabilitation counseling AND 15 semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area of learning disabilities, to include, adult cognitive and achievement assessment; OR

 

The equivalent - Candidates not possessing the required qualification(s) as stated on this announcement must complete the Request For Equivalency Form as part of the application process to explain in detail how their qualifications are equivalent to those above; OR

 

Valid California community college instructor credential in appropriate subject issued prior to July 1, 1990 (per California Education Code 87355); AND

 

Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, socio-economic, academic, and cultural diversity within student populations, including students with disabilities, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.

 

A teaching demonstration will be required by those candidates selected to interview.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of the California Community College Learning Disabilities Eligibility & Services Model (LDESM) training. Experience in conducting learning disability evaluations with adults in community college following the LDESM. Experience in administering and interpreting the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale IV (WAIS IV), the Woodcock-Johnson IV Tests of Achievement (and Cognition), and other test instruments used in the Learning Disabilities Eligibility & Services Model. Experience evaluating disability documentation and determining reasonable accommodations based on functional limitations. Proficiency with a variety of computer applications used by LD specialists. Working knowledge of Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, and other Federal and State legislation affecting the provision of disability services.

 

Teaching or counseling experience within the past four years providing instruction and/or guidance to persons with learning disabilities, preferably in a California community college. Experience developing/reviewing curriculum and assessing learning outcomes. Have an equity-minded, culturally response teaching approach. Knowledge of universal design and innovative teaching methodologies as a framework for achieving equity. Knowledge of and ability to utilize a variety of technology tools, assistive technology, and online resources to enhance learning and independence for students with disabilities.

 

Effective oral and written communication skills. Willingness to work with all types of disabilities and advocate for the needs of students with disabilities. Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively as a member of a team which includes faculty, classified personnel and paraprofessionals; ability to provide training and supervision to graduate level paraprofessionals. Commitment to the community college mission. Demonstrated skill with addressing issues of equity. Demonstrated expertise in culturally responsive methodologies, particularly as it relates to students' lives, interests, and communities.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Contract shall be for a full-time tenure-track teaching assignment for the 2022 - 2023 academic year, beginning in August. SALARY

The starting salary ranges from $73,328 - $100,718 depending on education and experience.

INTERVIEW EXPENSES

Individuals identified for FINAL interviews are eligible to have expenses paid. Reimbursement will be limited to economy airfare (to and from point of origin) and for meals and lodging. Sick Leave and Disability

Paid sick leave is granted equal to one day for each month of service. Sick leave may be accumulated indefinitely. Rather than State Disability Insurance, limited sick leave benefits are available for days beyond the earned sick leave days and are paid at fifty percent.

 

Retirement

Full-time employees contribute a percentage of their regular salary to either the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) or to the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and Social Security. Upon termination, STRS or PERS retirement contributions may be withdrawn in full, plus accumulated interest. Various benefit options are available for employees upon retirement.
