JOB SPECIFICATION
MAINTENANCE WORKER IV - HVAC
THE POSITION
Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semiskilled maintenance work in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) trade; and performs related work as required.
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director – Maintenance and Operations
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class are skilled HVAC repairmen. Although work requires the use of journey level tools and the ability to perform operations in HVAC, the skill required in this field is less than would be required of a journey HVAC worker. Incumbents are expected to work independently, and may serve in a lead capacity. The duties listed below are typical, but not all inclusive, for this position.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:
• Performs skilled and semiskilled maintenance work in the repair, installation and alteration of heating, ventilating and refrigeration systems and related equipment and facilities.
• Makes routine and emergency repairs and adjustments to equipment and facilities.
• Assists in fabricating and installing duct systems.
• Assists in diagnosing and trouble-shooting controls.
• Assists in diagnosing and repairing low temperature refrigeration equipment.
• Installs and operates energy management systems.
• Installs, maintains and repairs cooling towers, chillers, pumps, motors and compressors.
• Installs, maintains and repairs electrical equipment, motors, lighting circuits and other types of electric lighting and power equipment.
• Assists with regular preventative maintenance, inspections and repairs.
• Inspects boiler controls, valves, switches and water levels.
• Tests systems for leaks, faults and pressure/charge loss.
• Makes electrical installations.
• Checks ventilating systems to insure proper heat and airflow and assists in preventive maintenance.
• Welds, brazes and solders pipe, metal framing, structures and metal parts.
• Performs a variety of other unskilled and semi-skilled tasks as needed.
• Uses diagnostic, power and hand tools to perform the duties assigned.
• May serve in a lead capacity on designated projects and/or supervise other employees.
• Prepares and maintains schedules, records and reports as required.
• Follows drawings, sketches and blueprints.
• Performs routine safety checks and maintains fluid levels in District vehicles.
• Participates in District inservices, workshops and/or seminars.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE
Knowledge of:
• Tools, materials and terminology used in the heating/air conditioning and refrigeration industry.
• Methods and practices in the maintenance and repair of tools, machinery and equipment.
• General safety procedures and practices relating to the building trades.
• Code requirements pertaining to HVAC.
• Basic English usage, writing and math.
• Hazmat and safety regulations.
Ability to:
• Read and interpret working drawings, plans and blueprints.
• Proficiently use hand and power tools and shop equipment related to the HVAC industry.
• Keep work records and make reports.
• Work independently and maintain high standards of workmanship.
• Maintain work schedules in performing tasks.
• Maintain work pace appropriate to given workload.
• Drive and operate a variety of vehicles and equipment used in maintenance trades legally and defensively.
• Perform heavy manual labor and lift heavy items.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Speak, read and write English at a level required for satisfactory job performance.
• Maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.
• Maintain a pleasant appearance and demeanor.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade; three (3) years experience servicing and installing various type of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment (supporting documentation may be required); or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities; character references may be checked.

• Subject to noise from equipment and tools.
• Regular exposure to heat, cold, dust, water, mud, odors, chemicals, pollen and dirt.
• Ability to work around plants, shrubs and ground covers.
Physical Abilities:
• Good physical condition as determined by pre and current employment inquiries and health reports, school personnel and pupils.
• Possess physical strength and stamina to do strenuous work.
• Heavy work involving lifting, carrying (up to 50 pounds), pushing and/or pulling of objects (up to 100 pounds).
• Standing for extended periods of time.
• Physical dexterity in limbs and finger digits to operate equipment and to perform strenuous manual labor.
• Bending, grasping, stooping and kneeling.
• Walking over rough, uneven surfaces.
• Digging.
• Climbing ladders.
• Seeing to perform work.
• Reaching above shoulders.
Hazards:
• Working with machinery having moving parts.
• Exposure to pollen, chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, gasoline and motor oil.
• May involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, lifts and ramps.
• Standing and walking for extended periods of time.

A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
