Director - Educational Services - Secondary Education

POSITION SUMMARY

District Directors share a full range of duties and responsibilities in the Educational Services Division.  The specific responsibilities of each director position will be determined based upon the individual knowledge, skills and abilities of the director.  The Director of Educational Services – Secondary Education provides innovative leadership, direction and support to curriculum, instruction, professional development and the implementation of current and new instructional programs for secondary schools within the district, including the comprehensive high school.

ADMINISTRATION RELATIONSHIPS

This professional is directly responsible to the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services and is directly responsible for the supervision and evaluation of assigned departmental administrative, certificated and classified service employees.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a liaison and support provider to the District’s secondary schools.
  • Provide leadership in developing District philosophy and goals in the broad service areas of curriculum and instruction, professional development, student support services and consolidated programs for the secondary level.
  • Plan and facilitate professional development for secondary schools to support the implementation of Common Core Standards and instructional approaches that align with the Standards.
  • Direct and supervise the development, implementation and maintenance of coordinated articulated 9-12 District-wide programs in the broad services of curriculum and instruction, professional development, student support services and consolidated programs.
  • Develop, implement and monitor processes for the continuous modification and updating of Secondary District programs in the broad services areas of curriculum and instruction, professional development, student support services and consolidated programs at the secondary level.
  • Provide vision, planning and implementation for the use and expansion of technology in secondary schools.
  • Assess needs in Career Technical Education (CTE), identify and implement strategies to enhance current and future CTE offerings in grades 7-12.
  • Understand the theory and practice of Professional Learning Communities (PLC) and support the implementation of effective PLC practices in secondary schools.
  • Establish and manage within budgetary guidelines, those fiscal resources allocated to areas of responsibility.
  • Serve as a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet.
  • Provides supervision and evaluation of certificated and classified personnel in areas of responsibility.
  • Develops or revises District policies and regulations according to need in areas of responsibility.
  • Acts as the District representative to State, county and local meetings and committees in areas of responsibility.
  • Articulation between local colleges and universities.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services.

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of school district organization, law, policies, programs and curricula.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional pedagogy and principles of learning for secondary students and adult learners.
  • Knowledge of research on best practices in curriculum, instruction and assessment.
  • Knowledge of sound public relations practices.
  • Knowledge of current State documents and emphasis regarding innovative education practices in secondary education.
  • Knowledge of current research-based effective strategies for English Learner Programs.
  • Knowledge of the growth, development and learning styles of secondary and adult learners.
  • Knowledge of school business and personnel administration.
  • Knowledge of sound supervision techniques and strategies.
  • Ability to organize and plan for effective leadership.
  • Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to write and speak effectively.
  • Ability to plan, conduct and preside at meetings, seminars and workshops.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Required:

  • An appropriate California Administrative credential authorizing service in this position.
  • At least three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
  • At least three (3) years of successful administrative experience.
  • Possession of a Master’s Degree.

 WORK YEAR SCHEDULE 

This is a twelve-month position (or approximately 247 work days and 24 days vacation).
