RESOURCE SPECIALIST

DEFINITION

The Resource Specialist provides instruction, services, consultation, coordination planning, curricular resources, evaluation and remediation for individuals with exceptional needs. These may include all classifications of special education students whose Individualized Education Plan (IEP) requires placement in the resource specialist program.

 MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

  • Conducts triennial and initial assessments with psychologist and other service providers to determine eligibility for Special Education services. 
  • Develops instructional plans based on Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals
  • Utilizes assessment results in developing IEP goals and objectives to accommodate the wide variety of individual needs of each student.
  • Provides direct instruction to Resource Specialist program on a one-to-one, or small group basis, either in the resource room or the general education classroom.
  • Consults with staff regarding general education accommodations, modifications and interventions for students with IEPs. May provide consultation and/or in service to other school staff and parents which relate to student assessment, specialized instruction, management, and guidance.
  • Periodically, no less than annually, updates academic assessments and reviews progress with each student, his/her parents, administration, and general education teacher as part of IEP process.
  • Uses professionally accepted, researched based teaching strategies, techniques and materials to achieve identified lesson objectives and motivate students to perform at their highest level.
  • Utilizes general and supplemental curriculum and teaching strategies pertinent to individual student needs.
  • Uses data to support researched-based instruction and to demonstrate student achievement.
  • Coordinates the IEP of students with special needs with general education staff. Conducts all IEP meetings and follows all legal timelines and eligibility guidelines to maintain IEP compliance.
  • Serves as a member or case manager of the IEP Team as appropriate, serves as a member of the Student Success Team (SST), and other appropriate building level committees.
  • Maintains school standards of pupil behavior in the classroom for effective instruction.
  • Observes the behavior of RSP and students referred for Special Ed. in the regular classrooms and consults with teachers regarding these behaviors.
  • Prescribes and implements behavior management techniques as appropriate
  • Updates knowledge and expertise by attending meeting, in-service programs, conferences, and reading current literature.
  • Communicates effectively and works cooperatively with all other school district personnel, parents and other agencies for the best interest of each student.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Learning Handicapped Credential or Educational Specialist Instruction Credential-Mild/Moderate, or Resource Specialist Certificate
  • NCLB
  • CLAD or equivalent
  • Bachelors’ degree, including all courses to meet credential requirements 

 DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multiple Subject Teaching Credential
  • Bilingual
  • BCLAD
  • Autism authorization

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Physical mobility and stamina sufficient to move, sit, stand of walk for prolonged periods of time.
  • Physical strength sufficient to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent activity requiring full-body exertion.
  • Ability to see for purposes of reading correspondence, documents and other printed matter.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to write and use telephone.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels in person and/or on the telephone.
  • Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation in person and/or on the telephone.
  • Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.

 

Requirements / Qualifications

Education Specialist Instruction Credential (Mild/Moderate) CLAD or EL Authorization NCLB Compliant Intermediate Spanish desired
