TITLE OF POSITION: HEALTH TECHNICIAN
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: Under the direction of the Director of Student Services and site principal, performs duties of a paraprofessional nature in the maintenance of good health practices among pupils of the District; performs a variety of medical treatments and procedures necessary in providing specialized health care services to meet the medical and physical needs of all students including those with exceptional needs in accordance with state law and district policy; administers basic first aid where such practice is indicated by the nature of the injury to pupils or staff; assists in the screening of pupils for vision and hearing deficiencies; and does other appropriate work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Reviews and maintains student health records.
- Arranges and coordinates health screening and immunization schedules.
- Coordinates information concerning special health needs and restriction of students.
- Maintains and keeps up-to-date first aid supplies.
- Screens students for exemption from school activities.
- Provides first aid and other appropriate treatment as required.
- Refers students with special health needs to the counselor or other appropriate public agency.
- Administers first aid and CPR.
- Provides specialized physical health care services such as toileting, catheterization, auctioning, colostomy care, oxygen administration and other similar procedures as authorized by the state guidelines for meeting the specialized health care needs of students.
- Duties may require assisting and transporting students in prescribed medical equipment (i.e., wheel chair, gurney, or stretcher).
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Receives general direction from the Director of Student Services and on-site directions from individual school principals.
MINIMUM OUALIFICATIONS:
Certification, Credential or Designation: CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Licensed vocational nurse certificate required. Possession of a registered nurse certificate is preferred. Candidates must be willing to take a two-quarter college class leading to a hearing test certificate. Possession of state certificates in visual acuity and audiometry or enrollment in college courses leading to the completion of requirements for these certificates.
Skills, Knowledge, and/or Abilities Required: Knowledge of basic symptoms of communicable diseases; first aid practices and procedures; essential skills of standard nursing practices. Ability to follow oral and written directions relating to the implementation of the District Health Program.
Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Must possess valid and current first aid and CPR certificates. TB test clearance, criminal justice fingerprint clearance, and pre-employment physical and drug test.
