Based upon the incarcerated students’ learning needs, assessments results from the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS), and other educational assessment tools and documents, the Academic Teacher will develop lesson plans, assign coursework and provide a course of study based on the specific academic program and the student’s individual needs. The Academic Teacher will be fully aware of the institutional mission and services through training and professional development. The Teacher will be required to participate in site level and state level professional development and accreditation processes. He/she will also maintain control and security consistent with departmental, institutional, and educational procedures; and maintain personal safety by wearing a Personal Alarm Device (PAD) or by other departmental sanctioned means. The individual will possess and utilize the knowledge of current methods and materials. The Academic Teacher must possess a current, valid California Teaching Credential. CDCR’s Office of Correctional Education is seeking credentialed teachers to prepare adult inmates for high school equivalency or diploma. Come be part of CDCR’s effort to improve public safety by preparing inmates for successful community reentry.
Academic Programs
Adult Basic Education (ABE) I, II and III provides incarcerated inmates/students opportunities for acquiring academic skills through an emphasis in English. Language Arts and Mathematics. General Education Development (GED) provides instruction in English/Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science and Social Studies to prepare offenders to take a high school equivalency exam. The High School Diploma (HD) Program is designed to provide offenders with an opportunity to fulfill current graduation requirements for the State of California, Department of Education, and secure a High School Diploma. The Voluntary Education Program includes literacy, adult secondary education, library literacy, television (eLearning) programs, and/or college (via face-to-face classes or correspondence)
