EL RANCHO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT 9333 Loch Lomond Drive, Pico Rivera, CA 90660 DISTRICT PEACE OFFICER (POST Trained) DEFINITION: Under general supervision during an assigned shift, patrols by vehicle and on foot buildings and grounds in order to protect students, materials, equipment and other property of the District, and to perform related duties as required; is responsible to the Superintendent or his designee. CHARACTERISTICS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: May work alone or with other members of the Security Department to patrol District facilities to assure that doors are locked, windows are secured, and locks and gates are properly closed and locked; transports District deposits to the bank, prevents unlawful loitering and illegal activities on school property; responds to radio and phone calls from monitoring company to investigate possible intrusions into buildings; works closely with school and law enforcement authorities in potential or alleged law violations; conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations of incidents as required; makes written reports and keeps shift log sheet; may testify in court or formal proceedings; make emergency minor mechanical and electrical repairs. Assists administrators and faculty in the supervision of student behavior at authorized school activities including social events, programs, athletic events, and unauthorized student activities such as demonstrations or other problems involving crowd control. MANDATORY REQUIREMENT: Applicants must have completed the regular basic course standard format academy as approved by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) within 30 months of application and meet the following requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: AGE - at least 20-1/2 years old on the date of the written exam. EDUCATION - U.S. high school diploma, G.E.D. or California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate. CITIZENSHIP - proof of United States citizenship, or if a permanent resident alien, proof that an application for citizenship was accepted by I.N.S. prior to the date of the written exam. DRIVERS LICENSE - possess a valid California Driver’s License. HEALTH - excellent physical and mental health and may be required to pass the Physical Assessment Test (PAT), Medical Exam, Psychological Exam. (The PAT exam is for trainee positions only). BACKGROUND – is of good moral character as determined through a Background Investigation. OTHER QUALIFYING FACTORS: Knowledge: Group law enforcement procedures, crowd control procedures, security systems methods and procedures; common fire hazards; fire equipment used in buildings. Ability to: Communicate in Spanish is desired; learn and interpret specific rules, laws and policies pertinent to apprehension and retention of unauthorized individuals on District grounds and/or property; exercise consistent good judgment; deal effectively with a wide variety of personalities and situations requiring diplomacy, poise and firmness; detect and prevent criminal activity; think and act quickly in emergencies; work without supervision; keep accurate records and submit clear, comprehensive, and concise reports; work nights, holidays and weekends; follow oral and written directions. Experience: One year full-time experience in security work, law enforcement or related responsibilities; (experience in a campus environment is highly desired). Education: U.S. high school diploma, G.E.D. or California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate; completion of a regular basic course standard format academy as approved by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training within 30 months of application; and candidates must also complete the Campus Law Enforcement Course (32 hours) within two years of appointment. SELECTION PROCESS: The Selection Process consists of nine steps which must be successfully completed (as required) before a candidate may be hired as a Peace Officer. 1. COMPLETION OF AN APPLICATION Applicants should fill out a standard district application and attach a copy of their certification of completion of their academy training. 2. WRITTEN EXAMINATION The written examination consists of multiple choice questions and carries a pass/fail score. 3. INTERVIEW: (weight 100%) The interview is a review of your employment history, providing evaluation of your problem-solving abilities and community policing orientation, role adaptability, oral communications ability, motivation, experience, and respect for diversity. Passing the interview requires a score of 70 percent or higher. The score you receive will determine your rank on a hiring list. 4. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION The Background Investigation begins with completion of a Personal History Form, which requires compilation of extensive biographical information, completion of a comprehensive questionnaire, fingerprinting, and an interview. The investigative phase of the background process includes a thorough check of employment, police, financial, education, driving, and military records and interviews with family members, neighbors, supervisors, co-workers, and friends. 5. POLYGRAPH EXAMINATION A Polygraph Examination may be conducted to confirm information obtained during your background interview. 6. MEDICAL EXAMINATION The medical examination is thorough and it is essential that candidates be in excellent health with no conditions which would restrict their ability to safely do police work. 7. WRITTEN PSYCHOLOGICAL TEST/PSYCHOLOGICAL INTERVIEW The written psychological test consists of a personality and life history questionnaire. The results are evaluated by a psychologist in preparation for the oral psychological evaluation. The Psychological Interview consists of an interview and evaluation by a psychologist on factors related to successful performance in the difficult and stressful job of a peace officer. The information evaluated includes the previous written psychological test, as well as the background findings. 8. CERTIFICATION AND APPOINTMENT Certification and Appointment are among the final steps in the selection process. To be considered, you must have successfully completed steps one through six in the process. Certification does not guarantee an appointment. More names are provided to the Police Department than there are vacancies so that the Department can select those best qualified for appointment. The list is valid for one year, but may be extended to two years, at the discretion of the Chief of Police. 9. PRE-EMPLOYMENT SUBSTANCE SCREENING A pre-employment substance screening for drugs and alcohol may also be required prior to appointment.
