John F. Kennedy (JFK) is one of five comprehensive high schools in the Sacramento City Unified School District. Located in the Pocket-Greenhaven neighborhood, five miles south of downtown Sacramento, Kennedy is situated in a suburban community bordered by Interstate 5 and nestled within a semi-circular “pocket” bend of the Sacramento River. As part of the South Sacramento community, the school draws students from several surrounding neighborhoods including Pocket-Greenhaven, South Land Park, and Meadowview. For the past five decades, the diverse representation of students at Kennedy has made for a rich educational experience. The school is an anchor of the neighborhood, set on 44 park-like acres and functioning as a hub for numerous athletic, artistic, cultural, and volunteer activities. The school boasts one of the District’s richest and most diverse academic, extracurricular, and athletic programs. Kennedy enrollment has remained relatively stable over the past several years with approximately 2,100 students. The school offers a traditional six-period day and a selection of four pathways: Program in America and California Exploration (PACE), Manufacturing and Design (MaD), JFK Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC), and the Criminal Justice Academy partnered with the Sacramento Police Department. The school’s academic program is grounded in a standards-based curriculum. The established programs ensure a consistent and rigorous academic experience for all students in all classes. In addition, the school offers many elective courses to engage and enrich students beyond the core curriculum. Offerings include: Architecture, Engineering Technology, Speech and Debate, Choir, Culinary Arts, Journalism, Marching Band, Play Production, and Psychology among others. The various academic programs at JFK prepare students for postsecondary education, employment in a field of interest, or service in the U.S. military. The faculty, students, and staff at John F. Kennedy High School believe that the school’s work should: • Reflect the district’s philosophy • Represent the school and what it strives to achieve for students and families • Be relevant, clear, and visible • Indicate the school’s commitment to preparing students for college, career and life. Kennedy’s next principal should be able to build on existing work, structures, and systems by: • Demonstrating a strong grasp of instruction and the ability to articulate and implement an instructional vision. • Supporting the school’s fledging Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and social-emotional learning (SEL) both inside the classroom and across the school. • Creating and maintaining a safe environment that fosters both academic growth and development. • Fostering a collaborative relationship among faculty, staff, students, and families • Continue work toward eliminating persistent achievement and opportunity gaps.
