SCHOOL NURSE Primary Function: Facilitate and strengthen the educational process of students by using nursing interventions to improve students’ health, prevent illness, and assist in the modification and removal of health related barriers to academic success. Supervision: Reports to the Health Services Supervisor Requirements Necessary to Perform Typical Duties: School Nurse Services Credential, possession of a valid Registered Nurse license issued by the State of California. BA/BS Degree, School Audiometrist Certificate, Vision Testing Certification, current CPR certification, valid California Drivers License, motor vehicle, and proof of insurance. Experiences: Three years experience in a school setting is desirable. Knowledge and Abilities: 1. Knowledge of Federal, State and local regulations/laws concerning students and health. 2. Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, parents and community agency personnel. 3. Working knowledge of office procedures. Typical Duties Performed: 1. Promotes school attendance and accurate learning by students by performing the following nursing services and others services not listed: providing health education and assistance to students, parents and staff as requested, conferring with school staff members, parents (home visits), and/or community agencies and providers regarding student health problems, and counseling students individually or groups of students in health-related areas. 2. Identifies those students with health issues that may potentially influence school progress and communicates the staff, parents, and providers as needed to facilitate the students being in school safely. 3. Facilitates for the safe administration of medications and training and supervision of unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP’s) for medication administration at school in accordance with established Board of Education policies and California State law. 4. Performs, trains and supervises UAP’s for routine first aid procedures and assists in screening ill or injured students according to established procedures. May provide emergency short-term care to students with a variety of situations requiring immediate care. 5. Performs, trains, and supervises UAP’s for Specialized Physical Health Care Procedures according to Board of Education policies and state law. 6. Provides State mandated vision and hearing screening for students in targeted grades and special education students. Coordinates follow-up healthcare by community providers. 7. Serves on the Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) Committee and Student Study Teams and provides input based upon assessments and/or other knowledge. Completes health and development evaluations for new special education students and three-year evaluations. 8. Plans with school administrators the implementation of State mandates for immunizations. 9. Participates in the formation of procedures for the control of communicable disease within the school. Communicate with school staff, students, parents, providers, and community agencies regarding students with communicable diseases. Monitor exclusion and readmission of students with communicable diseases. 10. Supervises the health clerk and health office at the designated school. 11. Performs other duties as required to accomplish the objectives.
