Golden West College (GWC) is seeking a full-time, equity-minded, tenure track Counselor to provide essential counseling and coordination services in the transfer center, commencing with the 2022 fall semester. Under the supervision of the Dean of Counseling the incumbent is responsible for developing, planning, and organizing the college's transfer functions. The coordinator will be responsible for providing essential leadership to the college in ensuring that transfer as a mission is an institutional commitment. As the transfer program coordinator, the incumbent also will be responsible for the recruitment, retention, and transfer of low income, first generation transfer bound students.  

 

This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development. 

 

The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off-campus and is subject to change as needed. The 195-day contract includes the fall and spring terms, and 20 days to be distributed between peak transfer times in August and January. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Serve as the primary contact person for inquiries from administrators, faculty, staff, students and the community concerning GWC transfer programs and services. 

• Serve as the liaison between GWC and baccalaureate-level universities regarding admission policies and transfer requirements; Maintain into transfer requirements to independent or out-of-state universities. 

• Provide transfer counseling that supplements the counseling within the counseling division; handle complex cases referred by other counselors, administrators, instructional faculty, advocacy for students regarding denial of admission. 

• Collaborate with other campus programs, including instructional divisions, Guided Pathways, Dual Enrollment, EOP/S, DSPS, Puente, CalWORKs, and other campus-wide programs on matters related to Associate Degree for Transfer completion and university transfer pathways.  

• Attend and participate in Intersegmental committees, CCC Statewide Transfer Center Directors meeting, attend conferences sponsored by UC, CSU and Independent college; Region 8 Transfer center and Articulation meetings; South Coast Higher Education Council, and WACAC- Transfer Advocacy Committee meetings. 

• Receive and interpret California Community College and university updates though the statewide Transfer Center Director’s distribution list and redirect these updates to counselors, staff, and administrators. 

• Serve as the site administrator for UC TAG and e Verify and evaluate student records for accuracy and reporting.  

• Develop and maintain annual calendar for transfer functions, advertise and maintain promotional materials, update the website with relevant content and distribute to the campus and community.  

• Develop, coordinate and plan all events in the Transfer Center including but not limited to classroom visits, college fairs, guest speakers, transfer workshops, and university representative visits. 

• Request funding to supplemental funds including the development and submission of budget proposals to ASGWC, SEAP, and other local, state, and federal sources.  

• Serve as team lead to all employees and student workers in the center  

• Train and coordinate part-time Counselors and student workers as needed; assist classified employees in completing tasks and assign tasks and monitor classified employees. 

• Manage the Graduate Student Intern Program in partnership with local universities including the recruitment, interviewing, training, and evaluation of interns. 

• Develop and submit Transfer center goals for the academic year (submitted via CCC District Board); Complete yearly California Community College Chancellor Office Report. 

• Develop and evaluate Service Area Outcomes and complete Program Review reports as required.  

• Facilitate the UC Data Sharing Project and CSU post application follow up project. 

• Develop and sustain a counseling model that will benefit transfer students in the decision-making process and their exploration of alternatives regarding their educational, career, and personal matters, especially those that represent complicated transfer situations or students that face additional barriers to transfer. 

• Provide educational planning assistance for transfer students with an emphasis on equity groups / underrepresented and underprepared students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.  

• Develop and maintain Counseling classes as needed. 

• Work closely with the Articulation Officer to ensure accuracy of transfer information, expanding articulation agreements where necessary, and produce major guide sheets and the Transfer Planning Guide. 

 

Qualifications and Physical Demands

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS   

• Must meet one of the following qualifications under (1) through (3):

• Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR

• A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, OR

• Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS  

• Recent experience in transfer counseling within a direct transfer center function.  

• Experience with Counseling and teaching at the post-secondary level, preferably working with students from equity groups. 

• Demonstrated knowledge of community college curricula and the higher education system. 

• Evidence of understanding of and commitment to maintaining knowledge of local, state, and federal policies related to education.  

• Demonstrated knowledge of matriculation requirements with competencies in general academic counseling, educational planning, career and personal counseling. 

• Evidence of a strong commitment to professional growth and development, and to the continued innovation and improvement of successful counseling and teaching. 

• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with on-campus groups (including students, parents, faculty, administrators, and staff) as well as off-campus community and education partners. 

• Evidence of participation in student success initiatives in post-secondary setting. 

• Evidence of an ability to address the instructional needs to provide an inclusive and equitable education experience to the general student population. 

• Evidence of an ability to effectively engage with and facilitate authentic learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. 

• Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidenced-based assessment of student learning. 

• Evidence of innovation, scholarship, or leadership in counseling. 

• Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District. 

• Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution. 

• Ability to work with computers, use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students in the counseling process; and intrinsic motivation and ability to develop and teach online courses. 

• Ability to work with student record management, reporting, and educational planning software. 

• Evidence of ability to plan, coordinate and implement counseling projects, budges, and special events. 

• Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 

 

PAY PHILOSOPHY 

For a full-time, 2-semester, tenure-track Counselor position a maximum starting range of $63,953 to $102,641 is offered, based on the 2021-2022 salary schedule of $63,953 to $152,477. In addition, an annual stipend of $3,348 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution.
