DEFINITION Under general supervision, to operate a school bus and/or other passenger vehicle; to perform simple bus maintenance, as required; to instruct school bus drivers; and to perform related work as required. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS Positions in this class have the dual assignment of performing the full range of duties of a School Bus Driver, and scheduling and conducting training of new and current bus driving personnel. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES • Drives a bus daily or as assigned over designated rural and mountainous routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and/or discharging students; • Stops traffic as necessary to escort students safely across streets; • Changes tire chains as may be necessary to maintain traction on ice and snow covered roads; • Transports students, faculty and parents on field trips to special events, meeting departure and arrival times as scheduled; • Maintains buses and other vehicles in a clean and safe condition, such as cleaning, sweeping and washing buses and minor seat repairs; • Maintains good order among students on the buses and while waiting at the bus stops; • Follows District policies regarding the disciplining of students; • Fuels vehicles; • Checks oil, fluid levels and safety equipment; • May leave bus at end of route, connecting engine warming cables, securing bus and/or driving District vehicle to District or to home; • Instructs students in various aspects of passenger and pedestrian safety; • Conducts bus evacuation training; • If passengers are handicapped, provides special care and assistance as appropriate; • Keeps records of the operation of assigned vehicles as required by the District; • Completes daily reports on the operating condition and/or defects of an assigned bus; • Conducts daily safety inspections of assigned bus before beginning the route; • Schedules and conducts driver training for bus drivers which includes classroom and behind- the-wheel training in operation and safety. • Maintains records for licensed drivers in accordance with state regulations; • Schedules and conducts classroom and behind-the-wheel evaluation of driving skills for employees for required inservice renewal of license; • Conducts observations in the field; • Attends meetings regarding new laws and training requirements; • Conducts meetings of drivers to discuss new laws, training requirements, safety and bus operation; • Schedules bus driver examinations; • Keeps vehicles clean and reports observable mechanical defects; • Keeps records and reports, as directed, including weekly school bus condition reports, and student behavior reports; • Performs minor vehicle maintenance; • Performs related work as required. LICENSE REQUIRED Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver’s License; Successful completion of the Driving and First Aid examinations for school bus drivers given by the California Highway Patrol; Possession of valid California School Bus Driver’s Certificate. Possession of a Driver/Trainer Instructor Certificate. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code, the California Education Code, and current city and District regulations applicable to the operation of vehicles in transportation of students; The School district and surrounding area; Basic automotive mechanics; First Aid; Appropriate safety precautions and procedures; Training requirements for school bus driver licensing and renewal; General principles of training; Simple record keeping. Ability to: Drive buses and vehicles of various sizes safely, observing legal and defensive driving techniques; Maintain simple records; Pass a physical examination as prescribed by the state; Train school bus drivers in classroom and behind-the-wheel settings; Maintain a safe discipline level among students; Administer first aid; Read a map; Change bus tire chains with agility and skill; Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. The typical qualifying entrance background is experience as a school bus driver; and Completion of a formal classroom and behind-the-wheel training program approved by the California Highway Patrol for the operation of a school bus. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Light Work: Lifting, pushing and/or pulling objects normally does not exceed 50 pounds and is an infrequent aspect of the job. Mobility: Positions in this class require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend. Vision: Positions in this class require vision (which may be corrected) to read small print. Other Conditions: Incumbents are occasionally required to put on or take off tire chains in inclement weather without effective protection from sun, cold and rain. SALARY LEVEL Range 25 of the ACUSD Classified Salary Schedule.
