California Private Teachers is seeking a Private Teacher for a family living primarily in Portola Valley, CA. The Private Teacher will be responsible for the academics and homeschooling of three elementary grade level students for the 2022/2023 school year. The children will be in Kindergarten, 2nd grade, and 4th grade in the fall. The Private Teacher must have experience in an elementary school setting and a keen interest in alternative and progressive education. Knowledge and experience with asynchronous and synchronous learning are essential to this position. The Private Teacher will be expected to offer enrichment opportunities beyond the core subjects and curriculum. The children have unique strengths and diverse interests. Based on the children’s interests in art, science, outdoor education, and literature; the ideal candidate will offer various forms of enrichment in these subject areas. While it is important that the children keep up with the academic standards, the family is looking for someone who can support the children’s creative, critical, and independent thinking using project- and inquiry-based lessons. Candidates with knowledge of experiential learning and appropriate teaching practices are strongly desired.

Job Summary- California Private Teachers is seeking a Private Teacher for a family living in Portola Valley, CA. The Private Teacher will be responsible for the academics and homeschooling of a single 7th grade student.  

 

Ideal candidates for this unique opportunity will have experience in a middle school setting and a keen interest in alternative and progressive education. Knowledge and experience of appropriate teaching practices in the classroom are essential to this position. The Private Teacher will be expected to offer enrichment opportunities beyond the core subjects and curriculum. Based on the child’s interests in nature, STEM, history, and literature; the ideal candidate will offer various forms of enrichment in these subject areas.  

 

While it is important that the child keep up with the academic standards, the family is looking for someone who can support the child’s creative, critical, and independent thinking using project- and inquiry-based lessons.



The parents described the ideal teacher as someone who is gentle, warm and loving, patient, and open to an alternative way of teaching. Social emotional learning and therapy integration will be important in this position. The ideal teacher will want to collaborate and be part of a team that is child-centered and devoted to supporting the child’s individual growth and success. The ideal teacher will focus on the developmental needs of the whole child: mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional.   

 

*Requirements/Qualifications:

The Private Teacher will be responsible for developing the curriculum, lesson planning, providing enrichment opportunities, and interventions when applicable. The family hopes to find an engaging, enthusiastic, and passionate educator who strives to develop the child’s intellectual, artistic, and pragmatic skills in an integrated and progressive manner. The Private Teacher must possess the necessary knowledge and pedagogy to teach middle school grade levels effectively while also creating a learning experience that is tailored to the child’s unique learning style and developmental needs. The teacher must be able to foster a love of learning and help facilitate the exploration of the child’s interests in a way that is age appropriate and conducive to his success as a young learner.  

 

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning. 
  • Design lesson plans and school year curriculum in collaboration with the family and California Private Teachers
  • Communicate and interact directly with the child at the child's grade level. 
  • Communicate with and respond to the child during activities and routines. 
  • Work with the child one-on-one to develop skills that the child finds particularly challenging. 
  • Devise learning strategies to build on the child’s strengths and compensate for any weaknesses. 
  • Plan and implement a daily schedule that provides a balance of activities. 
  • Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessments that are in accordance with established procedures.
  • Encourage and model social behavior and expectations that are developmentally appropriate. 
  • Encourage and monitor the progress of the child and use information to adjust teaching strategies. 
  • Observe, evaluate, and maintain accurate and complete records of the child’s progress and development. 
  • Maintain all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, state policies, and homeschooling regulations. 
  • Maintain required attendance and other records in accordance with State of California requirements for homeschooling. 
  • Carefully observe the child, document observations, collect samples of the child's work, and communicate with parents regarding progress. 
  • In collaboration with the family, establish a well-designed environment with clearly defined, well- organized activity areas. 
  • Prepare the classroom for activities and maintain the educational environment conducive to learning. 
  • Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities. 
  • Implement and follow in home therapy programs and behavior plans as directed. 
  • Encourage parent, school, and community involvement. 
  • Obtain information for parents when requested in relation to the child’s overall health and well-being. 
  • Maintain consistent communication with all parents. specialists, and childcare professionals. 
  • Facilitate and organize co-curricular activities that support and enhance the child's socialization. 

 

Requirements / Qualifications

A valid teaching credential is required. Please indicate the expected issuance date of your credential if it has not yet been posted with the credentialing commission. Applicants who hold an out-of-state teaching credential/certificate will be considered.

  • Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years of teaching experience
  • Applicants must have experience in elementary or middle school education
  • Applicants must have completed an accredited education program with a degree conferred in Educational Studies
  • Applicants must have experience using project-based and place-based learning opportunities
  • Applicants must have a genuine passion for alternative education and playing an integral role in the lives of these children
  • Applicants must currently reside or be willing to relocate/commute to the San Mateo County area to provide in-person instruction Monday-Friday for 6-7 instructional hours daily
  • Applicants must be willing to travel with the family on educational trips during the school year
