Requirements / Qualifications
Valid California Speech-Language Pathology Services (SLPS) in Language, Speech, & Hearing or a Clinical Rehabilitative Services credential in Language, Speech, & Hearing is required for this position. However, Blue Oak may consider any one of the following alternative options: -- Education Code §44831 allows public schools to employ an individual who holds a Speech Pathologist license issued by the Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology & Hearing Aid Dispensers Board and who has also earned a Master’s degree in communication disorders. A Certificate of Clearance issued by CTC will be required upon hire for an individual who qualifies through this option. -- Applicants who have completed an equivalent speech-language credential program in another state may qualify for the California SLPS credential with verification of possessing or qualifying for that state’s SLPS credential -- Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications as described in CTC Coded Correspondence 15-05 may apply for the SLPS Variable Term Waiver. Required criteria for initial issuance includes: a. Hold Bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology OR hold a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential OR an Education Specialist Credential; AND b. JOB DESCRIPTION:
Provide speech/language service students identified as needing speech and /or language as part of their IEP. Speech-language specialists assess, diagnose, treat, and help prevent speech, language, cognitive, communication, voice, swallowing, fluency, and other related disorders. They develop and implement individualized programs of habilitation of speech, voice, articulation, hearing and language disorders for school age children. Assist students with skills for coping in the mainstreamed educational setting. Complete other related functions as required.
Duties of this position include but are not limited to:
1. Responsible for the management of each student’s IEP (Individual Educational Plan)
2. Work in close cooperation with other staff and parents in developing an appropriate I.E.P. as well as monitoring the results of each IEP
3. Participate in IEP meetings as necessary
4. Perform other assigned duties related to the general welfare of the school programs and the students
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Follow state mandated and department guidelines for referral, assessment, and placement of students in speech and language therapy
2. Identify pupils with speech, language, and/or hearing problems through screening and diagnostic evaluation
3. Determine eligibility for students comprising speech caseload based on state and SELPA eligibility criteria
4. Develop an individual education plan with parents for each student based on assessment needs and including annual goals and specific objectives
5. Participate in assessment and placement meetings for students referred for special class consideration as appropriate
6. Plan, schedule, and implement a therapy program to assist identified students with improvement in speech and language deficit areas
7. Confer with parents, classroom teachers, psychologist, school nurse, and other professionals as needed
8. Maintain appropriate records on assessment, therapy progress, and IEP timelines for caseload
9. Provide information for all district, county, and state reports when requested
10. Maintain professional competence through attendance at conferences, workshops, classes, and department meetings
11. Establish and maintain communication and rapport with school site staff. Provide resource information to teachers and parents as needed
12. Implement inclusion and community-based activities as appropriate for each student
13. Participate in committees or site activities, as appropriate
14. Maintain confidentiality regarding student files or other relevant material
15. Establish and maintain an orderly, attractive, positive, and safe learning environment
16. May be required to attend trainings outside the normal workday, locally or out of town
17. Perform other duties normally required by certificated employees as adjunct to the regular teaching assignment

1. Principles and techniques of speech, language, assessment and therapy
2. Behavioral management systems and current trends in educational methods for teaching language, speech, and hearing students
3. Principles and methods of recognizing, testing, and evaluating language, speech, and hearing students
4. Non-verbal communication techniques and systems
5. Child growth and development and characteristics of children with speech, language and hearing needs
KNOWLEDGE OF:
1. Work with designated student populations (autistic, preschool, K-8, etc.)
2. Work with the disabled population
ABILITY TO:
1. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults
2. Function as a productive team member and interact positively with staff members, community agencies, and parents
3. Maintain confidentiality of information pertaining to students and their families
4. Respect and show appropriate consideration for age, gender, cultural/linguistic background and related factors when providing services
5. Prepare, implement, and monitor effective Individualized Education Plans, including the ability to prepare plans using an online or computerized IEP system
6. Speak and write effectively
7. Effectively implement the California Standards for the Teaching Profession competencies.
