BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, explain, interpret and translate information regarding District programs and policies for English and non-English speaking parents and community members; write, edit and publish District materials; assure compliance with legal requirements relating to communication with parents in their primary language; assist with translating and typing or specialized reports as required by State and federal law.



REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Explain, interpret and translate information regarding District programs and policies for English and non-English speaking parents and community members; improve communication among District staff, Board of Education members, students, parents and community members.

Provide interpretation at IEP meetings, parent meetings and a variety of other meetings and conferences as assigned; utilize translation equipment for simultaneous interpretation as needed; assure parents, students and others understand objectives and information of the meeting; maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

Receive and respond to requests for translations from teachers, administrators, school sites and District staff; coordinate related services.

Translate District materials, legal documents, letters to parents, IEPs, bulletins and other materials produced in English to a designated second language.

Type within specialized reports to assure compliance with established laws and regulations.

Operate a computer and assigned software programs; operate standard office equipment as assigned.

Maintain IEP and related files.

OTHER DUTIES:

Perform related duties as assigned.



INITIAL/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school, or equivalent, supplemented by demonstrated bilingual/biliterate skills and six months experience translating materials from English to the designated second language.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California driver's license.

Medical, legal, psychological and educational terminology in English and a designated second language for interpretation of various meetings.

Operation of a computer and assigned office equipment.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

ABILITY TO:

Translate written communications from English to a designated second language and vice versa.

Explain medical, legal, educational and psychological terminology to parents.

Provide a finished product related to written translations including typewritten or legible hand written products.

Express thoughts clearly and concisely in both languages.

Maintain confidentiality of information.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
