GENERAL PURPOSE
 
Under the general supervision of school administrators, teachers and support staff, a Yard Supervision Aide assists and oversees students' activities in and around designated areas within school sites.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
 
A Yard Supervision Aide is distinguished from Instructional Assistants in that a Yard Supervision Aide does not provide instructional support to teachers.  Yard Supervision Aide activities are limited to non-instructional support, activities outside of the classroom. And, a Yard Supervision Aide is distinguished from Campus Security Officer in that a Campus Security Officer supervises students conduct to prevent vandalism theft or other illegal activities, while a Yard Supervision Aide maintains order outside of the classroom, under the supervision of school administrators, teachers or support staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
 

  1. Monitors students' behavior, and refers students to school staff for disciplinary actions.  
  2. Supervises students while they are eating lunch, recess, and before and after school.
  3. Directs students in appropriate clean-up behavior after lunch.
  4. Oversees and checks various student related activities on the playground in the presence of school staff.
  5. Accompanies students to and from lunch areas and playgrounds.
  6. Assists students as they arrive to or depart from school.
  7. Maintains staging area for students who ride and get off from various publicly and privately owned and operated transportation systems.
  8. Participates in outdoors activities with students.

 
OTHER DUTIES
 

  1. Distributes to and collects from students materials, outside of the classroom.
  2. Participates in emergency drills.
  3. Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
Knowledge of:
 

  1. District rules and procedures, including methods and techniques for student safety.
  2. Effective communication methods, in both writing and orally.
  3. Playground games. 
  4. Emergency procedures.
  5. Elementary and secondary school environment.
  6. Crowd control methods.
  7. Safety hazards for students and staff.

 
Ability to:
 

  1. Treat all students in a fair, impartial and respectful manner.
  2. Follow written and oral instructions.
  3. Identify and report security concerns.
  4. Use District provided equipment related to assigned tasks.
  5. Dress appropriately in accordance with the work environment.
  6. Work effectively with others.

 
Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalency or higher, is preferred.
  • Six months of similar work experience is preferred.


Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
 

  • Some assignments may require the ability to communicate in a designated second language.

 
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
 
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.
 

  • Lift, carry, push, pull, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, walk, run, and crawl.
  • Perform light physical exertion.
  • Lift 20 pounds.          
  • Carry 15 pounds.
  • Reach in all directions.
  • Stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
  • Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
