POSITION TITLE: DEPARTMENT CLERK
CLASS DEFINITION:
Positions within this class are characterized by having as their primary assignment clerical duties within an office or library setting. Under general supervision, these positions perform duties that are generally specific and routine in nature and include maintaining resources, filling out standard forms, keeping records and performing mathematical calculations, including the handling of money. The clerk classification is generally under the lead of a school secretary or department manager in school site settings, but is evaluated by the administrator. At the central services level, the clerk classification is generally given to positions which are under the lead of a department head. Levels within this class are differentiated by virtue of the level of skills required, the degree of independence expected of the position, and the level of education and experience or training required to perform the specifications of the assignment.
POSITION DEFINITION:
Under general supervision at a central services department, to do a variety of clerical work involving numerous specific routines, standard policies and procedures and do related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
• Type cards, lists, reports, bulletins, curriculum guides, requisitions or other materials from rough drafts or clear copy
• Compile information from various sources
• Check and review a variety of data for completeness and conformance with established regulations and procedures
• Answer phones and greet students, staff and the public
• Provide routine information
• File and make entries to records
• Operate standard office machines
• Keep simple financial records
• Maintain a storeroom and a system for supplying the department
• Requisition supplies, equipment and services
• Act as a backup to the central office receptionist duties
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Education and Experience – Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in typing and office practices, and one year experience in performing general office clerical work.
Knowledge and Abilities - Knowledge of modern office practices; ability to communicate with
students, teachers, parents and other adults; ability to type at the speed of not less than 40 net words
per minute; ability to operate standard office equipment; ability to establish and maintain
cooperative working relationships and to follow written and oral instructions.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
___ Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various office equipment and machines
___ Able to conduct verbal conversation in English and other designated languages
___ Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels)
___ Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, walk
___ Able and to lift up to 20 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally
___ Able to push and pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder external rotation and internal rotation
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder abduction and adduction
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for elbow flexion and extension
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for back flexion
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for hip flexion and extension
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for knee flexion
___ Able to exhibit manual dexterity needed to operate a computer and other classroom and office equipment
