LODI UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: PARAEDUCATOR-PHYSICALLY IMPAIRED BASIC FUNCTION: Assist in the care and education of children with physical impairments including performing specialized health care services. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Individual positions may not perform all of the duties listed nor do these examples include all responsibilities of positions in this class. Take action in emergency situations, including anaphylactic shock, cardiopulmonary distress, dysreflexia and insulin shock, and other medical emergencies; prepare and maintain health concerns list for EMT personnel. E Perform clean and sterile catheterizations, tracheostomy suctioning, ostomy care and natural drainage and percussion. E Feed physically impaired student including nasogastric tube feeding. E Monitor general well-being of children; take temperatures, pulse and blood pressure; check for abnormal rashes or infections. E Assist in administering prescribed medications and monitoring for abnormal or allergic reactions. E Assist in a variety of care and instructional services. E Position and reposition students frequently, including placing them in therapeutic equipment. E Assist in providing therapeutic exercise to students. E Maintain cleanliness of children; change diapers and assorted clothing. E Assist in loading and unloading of buses. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: General needs and behavior of children with physical impairments. Methods of performing catheterizations, tracheostomy suctioning, tube feeding including nasogastric feeding, ostomy care, postural drainage and percussion. Math, spelling, grammar and English usage to pass a competency test. Methods and procedures in assisting handicapped children with their personal needs and school activities. Operation of a computer and assigned software. ABILITY TO: Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Administer prescribed medication and react effectively in emergency situations. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Perform strenuous physical work involved in lifting and moving handicapped children up to 100 pounds. Remain calm in stressful situations. Operate a computer, and various instructional and office equipment. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by completion of 60 semester unit program related to handicapped students and specialized training and experience in catheterization, tracheostomy suctioning, tube feeding (tube-syringe methods), ostomy care, postural drainage and percussion. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California Licensed Vocational Nurse registration. Valid CPR Certificate. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Indoor work environment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Lifting and moving heavy children. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students. HAZARDS: Contact with body fluids.   • Associates Degree or Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Education Degree
  • (LVN's are encouraged to apply) SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/CERTIFICATES:: If selected for the position, out-of-district applicants must be T.B. tested and fingerprinted. A practical skills test may be administered at the time of interview. The successful applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment physical exam. Cost of the exam will be born by the District.
