Current Vacancies are: 1 - Library Media Technician position for 5.0 hours per day, 190 day workdays per year. Currently testing for an eligibility list at this time which will be used to fill vacancies for up to one year. Immediate need for substitute employees will be hired from this recruitment as well. This is a Dual Certification recruitment: Candidates who attain a passing score on each examination part will be placed in rank order on an eligibility list after promotional credits are added to the composite test scores of promotional candidates. These examinations are open to permanent employees and the public. SUMMARY OF DUTIES Under the direction of the Principal or other school site administrator, plans, coordinates and provides library media services in a media center style library; organizes and performs a variety of technical and clerical duties related to the acquisition, circulation and recovery of library books, textbooks, audio-visual materials and equipment, and other instructional and/or media materials; maintains a variety of records and files related to library operations and inventory; and performs a variety of technical duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.

HUMAN RESOURCES & SUPPORT SERVICES 5778 BP LIBRARY/MEDIA TECHNICIAN Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. Definition To plan, coordinate and provide library media services in an intermediate school library or a complex elementary school media center; organize and perform a variety of technical and clerical duties related to the acquisition, circulation and recovery of library books, textbooks, audio-visual materials and equipment and other instructional and/or media materials; to maintain a variety of records and files related to library operations and inventory; and to perform a variety of technical duties relative to assigned area of responsibility. Distinguishing Characteristics This classification is distinguished from the Library Assistant classification in that it is primarily used in the intermediate schools or large elementary schools where the library is more complex than those of the elementary schools. It is used in those elementary schools which have incorporated a fully developed and complex media center into their plan which requires a more advanced level of skills and abilities and a broader range of duties and responsibilities than those in the less complex libraries generally found in an elementary school setting. Supervision Received and Exercised Receives supervision from a site administrator. Essential and Marginal Function Statements Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Plan and coordinate the day-to-day operations of an intermediate school library or a complex elementary school media center; develop schedules for library use; maintain library in a clean and orderly condition. 2. Read stories to children and discuss; select stories at appropriate level for children. 3.. Perform a variety of duties related to the circulation of library books and media materials; check materials in and out and re-shelve books; receive and inspect books and media materials; catalog and classify new materials using the Dewey Decimal system; maintain financial records related to lost and damaged books; collect fines for overdue materials and deliver moneys to Business Office. 4. Order library and media materials including books, magazines, films and other instruc­tional materials within budget limitations; order, process, number and distribute new textbooks and supplementary instructional ma­terials; collect textbooks and materials from each track at year-end. 5. Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to the inventory and distri­bution of library/media materials and textbooks; check condition of library books and textbooks; mend or repair as needed; arrange for re­pair of audio-visual equipment as required. 6. Communicate with a variety of District personnel, publishers, vendors and other schools to order materials, verify deliveries and exchange materials; provide assistance to students in conducting research and developing library skills. 7. Monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior; train and provide work direction for student aides as assigned. 8. Perform a variety of general clerical duties including typing, filing and duplications; operate a variety of office machines including typewriter, calculator, copier and lamina­tor. 9. Provide required support for operation of Multimedia Unit and Telecommunications Inquiry Center. 10. Enter information on a regular basis into computer as required; maintain computerized check out and tracking system; may operate electronic book scanner. 11. Operate a personal computer and peripheral equipment, using modern library software, including library circulation systems and data input; operate a variety of modern office machines and equipment such as a typewriter, calculator. 12. Work directly with the classroom teachers providing textbooks, teacher materials, catalogs, and library access. 13. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Qualifications Knowledge of: · Operational characteristics of a comprehensive library services program. · Library practices, procedures and terminology including the Dewey Decimal System. · Reference material and sources. · Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers and supporting word processing and data entry applications. · Principal and practices of modern library services. · Principles and procedures of record keeping. · Methods and techniques of classifying library materials and repairing books and materials. · English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. · Basic mathematical principles. · Rules and regulations governing library operation. Ability to: · Plan, coordinate and provide library media services in an intermediate school library. · Perform paraprofessional library duties with speed and accuracy. · Organize and perform a variety of technical and clerical duties related to the acquisition, circulation, distribution and recovery of library books, textbooks, audio-visual materials and equipment and other instructional materials. · Select stories at appropriate level; read stories to children and discuss. · Work directly with classroom teachers providing textbooks, teaching materials, and library access. · Maintain a variety of records and files related to library operations and inventory. · Apply and explain library rules, regulations and policies. · Relate to the needs and requests of students and teachers in a consistently friendly and co­operative manner. · Monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior. · Operate a variety of office equipment including computers and supporting word processing and other software applications. · Maintain library in a neat and orderly condition. · Make basic arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately. · Work independently with minimal direction. · Operate a keyboard at a corrected rate of 45 words per minute. · Provide information and assistance to parents, the general public and other staff members in a helpful, courteous and timely manner. · Maintain confidentiality of privileged information obtained in the course of work. · Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. · Understand and follow oral and written directions. · Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. · Train and provide work direction to student helpers. · Lift 25 pounds. Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible technical library experience. Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in library science or a related field. Working Conditions Environmental Conditions: School library/media center environment. Physical Conditions: Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods of time; near visual acuity to review written documentation; ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels and on the telephone; manual dexterity to operate a telephone and keyboard; lift horizontally and vertically, bend and stoop. Education: The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires all individuals who provide instructional assistance to possess a high school diploma or equivalent along with one of the following: 1.A minimum of 48 semester or 72 quarter units of college coursework. 2.An Associate or higher degree from an accredited college or university. 3.Pass an assessment that demonstrates knowledge of the ability to assist in teaching, reading, writing and mathematics. Experience: One year of library experience or experience in a closely related field including cataloging, materials processing, and reference work.
