BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTION INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, travel to school campuses to provide intensive behavioral intervention instruction and guidance to Autistic and other designated students with special needs; monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; perform a variety of clerical and supportive duties related to tutoring and instructional activities.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Travel to school campuses to provide instruction and guidance to Autistic and other designated students with special needs; implement projects, practices and strategies to attain personal goals and achieve individual Individualized Education Plan (IEP) standards and objectives; assure activities comply with established policies and procedures. E
Assist with lifting and moving students as needed; position pupils according to learning activities and render various forms of personal care such as toileting and diapering, dressing, undressing, bathing, grooming and feeding; assure the safe use and operation of wheelchairs, prosthetic devices and other equipment. E
Monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; assist students and parents with implementation of IEP training and programs through instruction in a variety of activities; behavioral supports to provide guidance for students in various areas including critical life skills, academic learning, social and leisure skills, physical development and personal hygiene. E
Perform routine first aid including emergency treatment of children experiencing seizures or respiratory problems, orthopedic distress and pulmonary conditions; maintain daily documentation of specialized physical health care services and procedures as assigned. E
Present a variety of instructional materials and learning aides; modify materials, rephrase text and explain instructions and words. E
Perform a variety of clerical and supportive duties related to tutoring and instructional activities including typing, duplicating materials and filing; chart student progress; collect and record data. E
Provide support to students by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits; operate and assist students in the operation of audio-visual, assistive and training equipment. E
Implement assigned sections of pupil behavior management plans which may involve use of approved behavior modification, physical management techniques or other skills or knowledge to establish and maintain appropriate behaviors; supervise and discipline students according to approved policies and procedures. E
Monitor and assist students with special learning needs in drill, practice and study activities; direct students into safe learning activities and functions; maintain an orderly, attractive and positive learning environment. E
Maintain the confidentiality of student records and information according to established guidelines. E
Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures. E
Participate in staff meetings, in-service training programs and parent conferences as assigned; meet with special education staff members regarding programs, services, operations, activities and related information and procedures. E
Operate a variety of audio-visual equipment, electronic teaching machines and office equipment including a typewriter, copier and computer terminal. E
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Behavior characteristics of highly challenged special needs students.
Child guidance principles and practices related to children with special education needs.
Problems and concerns of students with special needs.
Basic subjects taught in District schools including arithmetic, reading, writing, grammar and spelling.
Safe practices in classroom activities.
Basic instructional methods and techniques.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Basic record-keeping techniques.

ABILITY TO:
Travel to school campuses to provide instruction and guidance to Autistic and other designated students with special needs; provide instruction and related guidance activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
Monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance.
Perform a variety of clerical and supportive duties related to tutoring and instructional activities. Reinforce instruction to students with Autism and other special needs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
· passage of the PUSD examination for this classification
or
· 48 college/university semester units or equivalent quarter units from an accredited college or university as determined by the U.S. Department of Education
and
· course work in child development related to students with severe or physical disabilities
· three years of experience working with students of various age levels requiring a specialized learning environment.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid certifications of First Aid, Adult/Child CPR and AED must be obtained within the first six months of employment or be submitted at the time of application. Only certifications provided by American Heart Association, American Red Cross or a District approved provider for First Aid, Adult/Child COR and AED will be accepted. Online certifications will be accepted from these vendors as long as a hands-on skills assessment is completed.
Valid California driver’s license.

Requirements / Qualifications
EDUCATION: Proof of education meeting State and Federal requirements is required and may be satisfied in one of the following ways: - Completion of at least two years of study (minimum 48 semester hours) at an institution of higher education - Possession of an Associate's (or higher) degree from an accredited US college institution. OR - Passing the District's local assessment that demonstrates the knowledge and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics at a level meeting state and federal requirements. EXPERIENCE: - One year of experience working with students requiring specialized behavior support (such as those with autism and/or behavioral disorders). A valid Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Certification can be substituted for the required year(s) of experience. EQUIVILENCY: An alternative career pathway is a bachelor's degree in psychology, human development or similar, plus a minimum of six (6) months of experience working as a behavioral therapist or behavior coach. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: - Valid certifications of First Aid, Adult/Child CPR and AED must be obtained within the first six months of employment or be submitted at the time of application.
