Will C. Wood’s goal is to provide students with a rigorous, relevant and engaging curriculum along with a safe learning environment so they are prepared for the academic and social challenges of both high school and college to be able to pursue their dreams and goals. Will C. Wood teachers focus on academic discourse and high quality tasks in their planning of goals for instruction. Students are provided an intensive academic program by Highly Qualified Teachers (HQT) who are trained in providing Direct Instruction following the High Quality First Instruction teaching model provided by the Sacramento County Office of Education. Will C. Wood has an active student council that focuses on building leadership skills, school pride, SEL, PBIS, and Restorative Practices. Will C. Wood also has the GEAR UP program that provides students with additional interventions and support. The use of technology is emphasized throughout our curriculum and in daily instruction. Will C. Wood’s new principal will be required to work with all stakeholders, including teachers, staff, community and active parent groups to build a foundation of equity and access that prepares students for high school and postsecondary success in college and careers.
The school’s student body of approximately 675 students reflects the rich diversity and culture of its location in Sacramento: 44.8% of its students are Hispanic/Latino, 4.5% White, 9.1% African-American, and 32.9% Asian. In addition, 95.5% of the student population is socioeconomically disadvantaged, 33.1% are English Learners, and 13.9% are Students with Disabilities. Will C. Wood’s new principal will need to address the 2019 California Dashboard that indicates students are 54.6 points below standard in English Language Arts (Red CA Dashboard indicators for African American and English Learner students) and 80.8 points below standard in Mathematics (Red CA Dashboard indicators for African American and Hispanic students). Will C. Wood’s new principal will also need to continue providing a safe and supportive environment that fosters social and emotional well-being and supports to improve the 9.9% suspension rate (Overall Red Indicator) and the 17.7% Chronic Absenteeism Rate (Overall Orange Indicator).
