CROSSING GUARD JOB SUMMARY Crossing Guard will, under supervision of the site administrator(s), perform necessary duties of a responsible nature to include the safe escort of school children across a roadway within a marked crosswalk. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: District policies and procedures as they apply; Roadway safety practice; Traffic safety regulations as they apply to school crossings; Sources of emergency assistance; Operation of equipment used in the safe escort of school children across a roadway; Oral communication skills; Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Ability to: Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, staff and the public (including members of ethnic communities) Inform school children of proper safety methods and assure that they observe all safety precautions. Monitor, observe and report student behavior according to approved policies and procedures. Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Perform appropriately in situations requiring tact and diplomacy. Understand roadway and traffic safety practices and regulations. Learn procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties. Maintain cooperation of motorists at school crossings. React quickly and effectively in emergency situations. Work independently with minimal or no supervision. Speak and understand Spanish (desirable). Keep simple records and reports. Communicate effectively orally. Follow-through with directives. Work at various configurations. Adhere to safe work practices. Meet schedules and deadlines. Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school or possession of GED required; supplemented by experience in working with children/youth in an organized setting; Possession of valid First Aid Certificate. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION 1. Observe traffic flow, watching for breaks in order to effectively halt traffic. 2. Observe that all vehicles appear to be reducing speed in preparation to stop. 3. Once traffic is halted, safely escort children across the roadway until all children have reached a place of safety from traffic. 4. Inform school children of proper safety methods and assures that they observe all safety precautions. 5. When necessary, report those students who fail to cooperate to school administrator(s) or other appropriate authority. 6. Observe and submit essential evidence (characteristics of automobile, driver, etc.) to proper authorities when motorists violate school crossing regulations. 7. Notify or request someone to notify proper authorities in emergency situations. 8. Observe and report actions of suspicious characters at or near the crossing locations. 9. May be required to keep simple records and reports relative to activities, incidents, etc., at or near assigned crossing guard location. 10. Incorporated within one or more of the previously mentioned essential functions of this job description are the following essential physical requirements. 1. Seldom = Less than 25% 3. Often = 51 - 75% 2. Occasional = 25 - 50% 4. Very Frequent = 76%+ 1 Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations. 4 Ability to stand for extended periods of time. 4 Ability to see for purposes of reading printed matter and observing students. 4 Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels. 4 Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation. 4 Ability to bend and twist, stoop, kneel, run and crawl. 1 Ability to lift 50 pounds. 1 Ability to carry 25 pounds. 1 Ability to operate office equipment. 4 Ability to reach in all directions.
