JOB SPECIFICATION
 ITINERANT TEACHER FOR STUDENTS WITH ORTHOPEDIC IMPAIRMENTS

 THE POSITION

Provides consultation, training and direct services to students with orthopedic impairments in regular education classes and District operated special education programs.

RESPONSIBLE TO:            Director, Special Education or Designee 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:

 

  • Participates in IEP meetings.
  • Provides collaborative consultation to general and special education staff regarding specific information related to orthopedic impairments such as: nature of the handicap condition, learning patterns, equipment, preparation of lessons, emergency measures, etc.
  • Provides direct instruction to pupils as outlined in student IEP’s. Instruction may be direct specialized instruction or some degree of support.  Direct instruction may be on strategies that the pupil can use to participate more fully in the kinds of academic activities that are taking place.
  • Demonstrates the use of equipment or specialized methods necessary for the student to participate in classroom activities.
  • Develops academic and/or equipment adaptations.
  • Provides technical assistance in the area of specialized equipment.
  • Utilizes counseling skills with students, teachers and parents regarding reasonable expectations, educational standards, transitions, etc.
  • Provides in-service training to staff, parents and students.
  • Utilizes time management skills in arranging students’ programs and coordinating other services.
  • Provides curriculum guidance to staff in determining which material is critical for the student to complete when he/she cannot keep pace with the class.
  • Provides consultation on integration and/or mainstreaming activities.
  • Assesses, recommends and implements assistive technology as appropriate for individual student.
  • Provides transition planning when students move from one level of programs to another or changes in placement are necessary.
  • Provides ongoing evaluation that may include formal or informal methods.
  • Confers with parents at school, by phone, in writing and in home visits as needed.
  • Performs other duties within the scope of Itinerant Teacher for Students with Orthopedic Impairments.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

 

  • Valid California Special Education credential or Added Authorization authorizing the teaching of students with orthopedic impairments to access regular educational environments.
  • Master’s degree in Special Education preferred.

 

 WORK YEAR:         185 Days
