CLASS TITLE: HEALTH ASSISTANT
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned Principal, administer basic first aid and screen ill or injured students in accordance with State laws and District regulations at an assigned site; assist with health testing programs; prepare and maintain a variety of records, files and reports.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform basic first aid procedures and screen ill or injured children according to established procedures; utilize a variety of health products, instruments and supplies in caring for injuries and health needs. E
Administer first aid in emergency situations and notify nurse, administrator, parents, physicians or paramedics as necessary. E
Prepare, maintain and type a variety of health-related records and files including student health records, emergency medical records, accident reports and others; assure immunization records are current; prepare correspondence, forms, notices and referrals; maintain files and duplicate materials as needed. E
Administer medications according to physician instructions; maintain related records. E
Check students for head lice as directed; notify parents as appropriate. E
Maintain the health office in a clean, orderly and safe condition. E
Operate standard health instruments and office equipment as required. E
Assist parents with explaining procedures, treatments or other general health related matters or making physician appointments as needed.
Assist in maintaining inventory of first aid supplies as necessary.
Assist with TB, vision, hearing and other health screening activities; schedule follow-up appointments if further testing is required.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
Basic First Aid and age-appropriate CPR techniques.
Health and safety regulations.
Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
Record-keeping techniques.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
Oral and written communications skills.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Ability to:
Administer first aid to ill or injured students.
Establish and maintain files, records, reports and referrals.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Read, explain and follow rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Learn and apply appropriate care and procedures related to ill or injured students.
Perform clerical duties such as filing, duplications, typing and maintaining records.
Operate standard health and office equipment as required.
Maintain regular attendance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year of clerical or office experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.

Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
Seeing to determine extent of illness or injury.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate various health-related equipment.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.

Exposure to blood-borne pathogens, body fluids and communicable diseases.
Requirements / Qualifications
**CPR and First Aid certification is required - please attach to your application. Please call 408-283-6021 to schedule your required exam. The components are: Spelling, Grammar, and keyboard test (40 wpm net). A completed application and Photo ID are required to take exams.
