Position Description

Defintion
Under supervision to perform skilled professional tasks designed to instruct students in those areas designated by the course of study and to do related tasks as well.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This position constitutes the majority of certificated positions in the district. It is distinguished from resource teachers, psychologists, nurses, speech therapists and counselors in that no additional special credentials are required and that the majority of the time is devoted to classroom instruction of students with a full spectrum of abilities and needs.
Qualifications
Knowledge of curriculum, child development , teaching techniques, learning styles and professional standards.
Ability to serve as (1) manager of learning experiences, and ( 2 ) to operationally provide learning experiences.
Duty #1. Classroom Management: The Teacher as a Developer and Orchestrator of Learning Experience, i.e., The Teacher as a Manager.
Duty #2. Classroom Operation: The Teacher as the Learning Experience,
i.e., The Teacher as an Operator and as a Performer.
Typical Tasks for Duty #1: The Teacher as a Manager
1. Meets formally and informally with students and their parents
2. Holds scheduled classes and appointments
3. Evaluates student performance
4 . Grades student products
5. Provides the classroom information to substitute or replacement teachers.
6. Supervises student research
7. Masters job-related materials and keeps current
8. Directs students in their performance of a variety of methods of instruction both as individuals and in groups. The instructional methods may include (a) lectures, (b) demonstrations, (c) Recitations/discussions, (d) case studies, (e) presentations of audio and video media, and (f ) simulations
9. Supervises student activities in a variety of settings, e.g., (a) standard formal classrooms,(b) resource rooms,
(c) cafeterias, (d) gymnasiums/athletic fields, (e) libraries, and (f ) simulation areas
10. Plans instruction applying the principles of learning and communication
11. Evaluates ef fectiveness of instruction
12. Plans special programs
13. Develops curriculum requirements
14. Controls teaching effectiveness& effficiency
15. Administers regulations and policies
16. Organizes classwork and homework

17. Sees logistical support for learning and teaching
18. Reports progress and needs
19. Develops and maintains student morale and discipline
20. Certifies student accomplishment
21. Provides instruction in careers, health, manners and morals as prescribed by the Calif ornia State Department of Education.
Typical Tasks for Duty #2: Classroom Operation
1. Gives remedial help to students
2. Participates on child study team and school assessment teams
3. Helps students prepare independent work
4 . Develops print and other media for classroom use
5. Perf orms a variety of methods of instruction using a variety of methods
of instruction in a variety of settings (see tasks 8 and 9 under Duty #1) .

1. The teacher uses probing questions for understanding of concepts, relationships and for feedback to the teacher

5. The teacher explains things well; puts ideas across logically and orderly
6. The teacher provides opportunities for pupils to learn material that they will be later tested on

1. The teacher shows respect for pupils
2. The teacher is tolerant of students who have diff erent ideas
3. The teacher uses supportive criticism rather than blame, shame, or sarcasm
4. The teacher is fair , impartial, and objective in treatment of pupils

1. The teacher constantly monitors pupils ' progress, time on task , and adjusts the pace accordingly
2. The teacher presents material in a well-organized fashion in order to use class time ef f iciently
3. The teacher has well-def ined objectives for pupils and is working toward them
4. The teacher uses pupil assignments that are relevant and in sufficient amount for depth learning
5. The teacher is businesslike and task-oriented in behavior

Fingerprints must be on file with the San Diego County Office of Education Clearinghouse. Applicants must meet Federal and State compliance requirements. Please attach the following to your application: 1) Copy of Valid Credential 2) TB Results (must be dated with 4 years of application)
