NOTE: This position is program specific, based on yearly review of funding.
Definition:
Under the supervision of the Site Principal and/or work direction of the Classroom Teacher engaged in the educational program; performs duties associated with providing designated instructional services to identified students; performs other duties associated with the SBCP (School Based Coordinated Plan) program or a Title I math or reading program to identified students in the District.
Class Characteristics:
Positions in this class are primarily supportive in nature and are designed to assist teachers and staff with identified students.
Examples of Duties:
1. Assists a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom environment; to include but not limited to monitor and oversee student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects; confer with the teacher concerning instructional activities and materials to meet student needs.
2. Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework and projects in various subject areas; assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.
3. Explain and assure student understanding of classroom assignment and homework instructions; assist the classroom teacher with the implementation of developed lesson plans and instructional activities.
4. Reads to students, explains words and meanings, leads discussions, work with mathematical problem solving and assists students in the review of various subject matters.
5. Confers with the teacher to identify learning needs and assist in the evaluation and recording of students’ progress.
6. Assists in providing an environment conducive for learning
7. Assists in assessing incoming students.
8. Provides guidance and ensures students adhere to safety rules.
9. Assists in supervising students during classroom activities, testing procedures and playground activities.
10. May assist students in computer labs.
11. Attend and participate in meetings and in-services as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
- General concepts of child growth and development and child behavior characteristics.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
- Practical methods used in assisting, motivating and controlling students; English usage including grammar, vocabulary and spelling; basic mathematical concepts; simple record keeping and filing.
- Safe practices in classroom and outdoor activities.
- Basic instructional methods and techniques.
- Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
- Operation of standard office and classroom equipment including a computer, assign software, and duplicating equipment.
Ability to:
Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward children; Assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom or other learning environment; Assist in the preparation of instructional materials and implementation of instructional activities; Assume responsibility for supervising students; Learn and utilize basic methods and procedures to be followed in instructional setting; Perform routine clerical work and basic mathematical calculations; Understand and carry out oral and written instruction; Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents and the general public; Monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and procedures; Operate standard office and classroom equipment, and computers.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Effective 1/1/03, the State of California and “No Child Left Behind” requires any schools in the Silver Valley Unified School District where paraprofessionals are employed, two years of college education with a minimum of 48 college credits, or an AA degree, or the passing of a state approved paraprofessional test, is required for any new employees in this classification.
- Recent experience in working with children or youth groups is desirable.
License Required:
- Applicants must possess a valid California Driver’s License.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Physical abilities include standing for extended periods, reaching, bending, stooping, squatting, fine manual dexterity, pulling, reaching, talking/hearing, and near and far visual acuity/depth perception; color vision/field of vision. Lifting, carrying pulling and or pushing up to 25lbs.

Our District Office is located in Yermo, CA just 15 miles north of Barstow, California. We have one (1) High School which is located here in Yermo. Two (2) Elementary Schools both are located between 10 to 20 miles east of our District Office. We also have three (3) school sites located on our Military Base (Fort Irwin) which is approximately 40 miles north of our District Office.
Location is subject to change based upon student and/or district needs.
