NOTE: This Position is Exempt from the Merit System.
DEFINITION: Under direction of an assigned supervisor, utilize tutoring techniques which motivate participants to develop learning and study habits which assure overall educational growth at various school sites. The program offers an academically challenging alternative to the traditional classroom setting for many public school students in Berkeley. Students meet weekly one-on-one or in small groups with their subject teachers. Additional support is available through the program’s tutors.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Tutor students in the areas of reading and language arts, English, Mathematics (Algebra and Geometry), Science, English as a Second language, Foreign Languages; assist in the preparation of materials required for remedial instruction in reading and math or any area where deficiencies occur; be responsible for scheduling and follow-up activities with students; participate in in-service training; attend staff orientation or team planning meetings. (Some assignments may require that the candidate be able to converse with the student(s) being tutored in a number of languages other than English).
KNOWLEDGE OF: Substantive knowledge of the subject area(s) in which they intend to tutor; child-guidance principles and practices; principles, practices, procedures of assigned learning environment; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; effective interpersonal and communication skills.
ABILITY TO: Due to the flexible nature of the program and the individualized instruction, tutors should be interested in general ed and alternative ed, be able to work individually and in small groups with students, be able to tutor multiple subjects and grade levels, have strong writing skills, and be able to commit to a minimum of 5 hours a week.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) or working towards this level degree.

OTHER: Proof of identification for completion of a Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, must be submitted at the time of processing for employment.
