BASIC FUNCTION:Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, perform journey-level duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems to maintain District plumbing lines in safe and sanitary working condition.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Plumber classification is the entry-level position in the series. Incumbents are responsible for performing journey-level duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures and sytems of District equipment and facilties. The Senior Plumber is the experienced-level classification in the series. Incumbents serve as a lead and provide training and work direction to subordinate plumbers. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:Perform journey-level duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems to maintain district plumbing lines in safe and sanitary working condition.
Diagnose problems and/or failures in plumbing and irrigation systems for the purpose of identifying repair and replacement needs necessary to maintain equipment and systems. Install plumbing systems and fixtures including toilets, sprinkler heads, sinks, hot water heaters, drinking fountains and others. Install, repair, replace, test and certify backflow prevention devices such as reduce pressure principle, detector checks, double checks, pressure and non-pressure vacuum breakers; recognize and maintain appropriate air gap and air breaks on indirect systems. Estimate materials and labor needed; maintain records related to work performed; inventory, store and purchase plumbing supplies and materials as needed according to established procedures. Prepare a variety of reports including work orders, time estimates, materials requests and cost estimates. Renovate plumbing systems to meet appropriate accessibility to students, staff and the public; assure compliance with health, building and public safety laws. Repair school site and District plumbing, equipment and components including gas regulator, irrigation systems, kitchen equipment and others; provide preventative maintenance of plumbing and irrigation systems. Respond to emergency situations regarding broken plumbing, drainage problems and others; resolve immediate safety concerns. Communicate with administrators, staff or other skills maintenance personnel concering plumbing issues, work orders and project requirements. Operate a variety of maintenance and plumbing tools and power equipment; drive a District vehicle to conduct work; clean and maintain vehicle and equipment in a safe and proper working condition. OTHER DUTIES: Perform related duties as assigned. INITIAL QUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and two (2) years journey-level experience in the plumbing trade. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California Class C driver's license. Backflow Tester's license, issued by the Los Angeles County Health Department, must be obtained with six (6) months of hire with the District. Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the skilled plumbing trade. Applicable national and State plumbing codes and regulations. Health and safety regulations. Safe working practices in an occupied public facility. Technical aspects of field of speciality. Techniques in routing and testing plumbing lines. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Basic record-keeping techniques. Shop math. ABILITY TO: Perform skilled duties and the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems. Estimate material requirements and order parts and supplies according to established guidelines. Meet schedules and time lines. Prioritize and schedule work. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Maintain routine records related to work performed. Operate a vareity of tools and power equipment utilized in the plumbing trade. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Indoor and outdoor environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Emergency call out. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling heavy objects. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Walking and standing for extended periods of time. Bending at the waist, kneeling, crawling or crouching. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate hand tools and specialized equipment. Seeing to read and perform plumbing functions.
