Located in the scenic, sea-side communities of Santa Monica and Malibu, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is a preK-12 school district serving approximately 8,835 students. SMMUSD is a diverse community dedicated to extraordinary achievement for all while simultaneously closing the achievement gap, and committed to pursuing excellence through equity. Three schools have been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools: Edison Language Academy, Will Rogers Learning Community and Lincoln Middle School. Lincoln Middle School has earned the Gold School designation in 2015 and is one of nine schools recognized as a California Distinguished School. The others are: Franklin, Grant, McKinley, Roosevelt, Will Rogers, and Webster Elementary Schools, and Malibu and Santa Monica high schools. The SMMUSD Mission Statement, Extraordinary achievement for all students while simultaneously closing the achievement gap, guides the work of the Excellence through Equity plan that includes the following three priorities: All graduates are ready for college and careers; English learners will become proficient in English while engaging in a rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum and all students engage in schools that are safe, well-maintained and family-friendly. Students attending Santa Monica High School and Malibu High School have a graduation rate of about 95%, with the majority of students moving forward with post-secondary education options.

Job Summary

• Understand and ensure adherence to the 10-Step AVID Tutorial process and tutor students in small groups as directed by the AVID teacher • Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students • Determine from student notes and discussions the concepts that students are struggling with and should therefore be further explained and assist in teaching study skills and other aspects of college preparation • Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and text notes, book notes and other AVID based assignments • Assist the AVID coordinator as requested, contacting teachers regarding course outlines and assignment schedules, helping with field trips, contacting parents, developing and preparing AVID instructional materials for tutorials, etc. • Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID teacher, coordinator, and director regarding student progress and areas of concern • Attend and participate required trainings and meetings • Underscore the principle of collaborative learning and the practice of students teaching other students through discussion of class and text notes • Allow students to shoulder the responsibility for their own active learning while guiding them with strategies that they will become accustomed to using independently • Reinforce the idea that learning extends far beyond mere studying to form the basis for long term accomplishments • Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for all AVID students to follow and serve as a motivated, organized and successful college student role models for students Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in or completed a degree or graduate program at an accredited college or university • Must have a strong math and English language arts background • Proof of current college enrollment status and minimum 2.5 GPA at an accredited college or university is required and will be requested at the start of each semester

SMMUSD is hiring AVID Tutors for the 2023-2024 School Year. Interviews will be scheduled during the fall, for an immediate start.. AVID tutors typically work approximately 12 hours a week, during the school day in both middle and high school classrooms.
