CLASS TITLE: FOOD SERVICE ASSISTANT
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Principal, assist in the quantity preparation and serving of foods in a school cafeteria; maintain food service facilities and equipment in a clean and sanitary condition.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Assist in the preparation and service of breakfast and lunch; mix, chop, slice, seed, wash and assemble food and food ingredients.
Make up serving trays and count, measure, box and wrap foods into serving portions; observe safe and sanitary procedures.
Set-up, disassemble, clean and operate stoves, ovens, mixers, steam tables, slicers and graters; wash and clean pots, pans, utensils and various serving equipment.
Stop condiments, food items and paper goods; assist in the storage and rotation of supplies in storage areas, and assist with periodic inventories as assigned.
Assist in the preparation of toppings, salads, desserts, sandwiches and main dish items.
Receive and count money, issue and collect lunch cards, make counts of food and beverages and call in results as assigned; operate a computer terminal to process lunch cards as assigned.
Assist on serving lines, set-out prepared foods, dispense foods in proper portions.
Monitor children in cafeteria, oversee student workers as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:

Basic kitchen utensils and equipment.
Safe and sanitary procedures and practices related to food services, kitchen and materials.

Learn to perform routine cooking and baking duties.

Read and write at a level sufficient to successfully perform the required duties.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Obtain a Food Handler's Certificate issued by San Bernardino Health Department at time of employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Kitchen environment.
Heat from ovens, cold from walk-in refrigerators and freezers.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Lifting heavy canned food cases.
Stooping and bending at the waist.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate various kitchen equipment and utensils.
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to store food and related materials.
HAZARDS:
Exposure to sharp knives and slicers.
